East Rail shares track with inter-city and freight trains on most but not all of its tracks.

East Tsim Sha Tsui is the latest station (the southern terminus) on the Hong Kong KCRC East Rail, opened on October 24, 2004, symbolizing the comeback of the Rail to Tsim Sha Tsui after 30 years.
KCR West Rail was proposed in the early 1990s and both the Mass Transit RailwayCorporation (MTRC, now the MTR Corporation Limited, MTRCL) and Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) submitted plans to the government, and thegovernment awarded the project to KCRC, and approved the first phase project in September 1998.
KCR operates feeder bus services for the better connection between the housing estates or villages and the KCR rail stations.These services include 15 West Rail and Light Rail feeder bus routes, and one residential route (As of March 2005).

The KCR west rail fits into the definitions of metro railways, as it is entire right-of-way, serves the urban territories, has short headways, and is electric.
This is not the case with both East Rail and West Rail, although some sections of the KCR in the urban area have such characteristics.
KCR West Rail and Ma On Shan Rail do not share tracks with other trains, and most traffic on East Rail are non-border-crossing passenger trains.

East Rail also operates intercity passenger services to Guangzhou on its own train and provides access for other intercity trains running to and from cities in the Mainland China including Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing.

Anyone starting their journey on KCR East Rail and wanting to get to TST currently has to change to the MTR at Kowloon Tong or take a bus or minibus from Hung Hom.
Meanwhile, the KCR has decided to replace all the signs in KCR East Rail that direct passengers to the southbound service.
