KCSN began using the new transmitter in a test mode on Tuesday, Feb. 22 and, after quickly gaining much improved reception, is set to make the official change on Tuesday, Feb. 29.
KCSN also began the new year with a new slogan, "The Best of Public Radio," which gradually will supplant the station¹s recent slogan, "Radio for Music Lovers." Engel said the new theme better reflects KCSN¹s focus on offering exceptional programming often not available elsewhere in Los Angeles.
In addition, Engel said KCSN during its overnights is airing more hours than any other local station of the BBC World Service, which incorporates news and arts programming.

KCSN already has plans, and is raising funds, to install "booster" equipment to extend their broadcasting reach and they have a new website "under construction." I would not be surprised if Joni was trying to support them a bit in their efforts by giving them this exclusive interview.
Subject: Re: Joni KCSN interview I recall Joni singing the praises of some college station that she could only pick up on the beach and that was wonderfully eclectic, playing jazz and classical and rock and literary works and the like.
KCSN is also described as very eclectic and kind of a big, eccentric free for all, so it could be them, too.

The recent expansion was funded by a $109,781 matching grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), as part of a pilot program awarding funding to public radio stations in the top 13 markets to equip them with HD Radio technology.
The grant to KCSN is the only one that incorporates broadcast expansion along with the new digital technology and is being used as a landmark test case.
The technology for KCSN’s new HD Radio signal is still in the testing phase, but when fully implemented, it will radically enhance the sound quality for all listeners, eliminating hiss, distortion, and other types of interference.

In a move that should significantly strengthen its signal to San Fernando Valley residents, Cal State Northridge public radio station KCSN (88.5 FM) has launched a new transmitter that will boost the station's signal with a sixfold increase in operating power.
Getting the new transmitter was a decade-long process that cost up to $150,000, said Engel, a former KCSN staffer who returned to head the operation in 1997.
In addition, Engel said KCSN during its overnights is airing more hours than any other local station of the BBC World Service, which incorporates news, information and arts programming.

ASD Decision: 1996--09--26--KSBR (FM), Mission Viejo, CA
By letter to Saddleback Community College et al., dated October 31, 1995, the staff denied Saddleback's petition for reconsideration, returned a contingent amendment as unacceptable for filing, and denied an associated request for waiver concerning the prohibited contour overlap provisions of 47 C.F.R. Section 73.509.(FN1) 3.
While denial of the waiver request with respect to first- adjacent channel Station KSPC rendered the original application unacceptable for filing, denial of the waiver request with respect to the pending application for co-channel Station KCSN alone would merely have left Saddleback's application mutually exclusive with California's application for KCSN.
According to the contingent amendment, KSBR would receive prohibited overlap from second-adjacent channel Station KUCI corresponding to 3.6 percent of the population (18,571 persons) and 2.12 percent of the land area within KSBR's 60 dBu contour.
