KEXP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
KEXP (formerly KCMU) is a public radio station based in Seattle, Washington, that specializes in independent and alternative rock programmed by its disc jockeys.
KEXP is broadcast in the Seattle area on 90.3 FM; on the Internet via streaming audio [1]; and on PanAmSat's Galaxy 10R satellite [2].
KEXP is often a testing ground for the university’s Computing and Communications department, leading to features not found by other stations.

The Expensive Expansion of KEXP (Seattle Weekly)
KEXP is nationally known as one of a handful of public radio stations, if there even are that many, that reach the young audience that jazz, classical, and news-and-information stations fail to attract.
KEXP cannot grow the "terrestrial" footprint of coverage by traditional over-the-air broadcast, because of a weak signal.
KEXP's department directors urged Mara to pass on the deal, too, and they had a sense of unease that their assessment wasn't communicated to the governing board or the advisory council.

 KEXP-FM will end KXOT simulcast
In 2004, Public Radio Capital announced that KEXP would lease and operate KBTC, which was renamed KXOT; KEXP replaced a classic-rock music format with a simulcast of its own eclectic blend of musical genres and artists generally not heard on commercial stations.
KEXP had hoped that by simulcasting its programming on KXOT and reaching a larger audience, it also would increase the base of fund raising for the non-commercial station, whose license is held by the University of Washington.
KEXP already has made some moves beyond dropping KXOT to prepare for next year, when the Allen subsidies run out; those include a management reorganization in which two positions were cut.

KEXP plays what it wants to -- and listeners love it
In the past few years, commercial-free KEXP has embraced, and, thanks to a University of Washington partnership, even created technology to overcome its limited signal and emerge as a national tastemaker in indie music.
This summer, KEXP began offering hourlong podcasts featuring unsigned bands and became the nation's first terrestrial station to provide a low-bandwidth stream for cell phones and handheld devices.
At KEXP, the DJs choose what they play, with a few limitations: Certain bands are in rotation, and a local band must be played once an hour at minimum.

Part of KEXP's magic is their DJs, and paying your DJs what they are worth figures into the cost of operating a radio station (I'm not sure what the usual clear channel DJs get paid around here, but something tells me KUBE's "T-Man" drives a nicer car than any DJ at KEXP).

OnTechNews -- UW Engineers Create Innovative Playlist System for KEXP
KEXP 90.3 FM public radio in Seattle, the station licensed to the University of Washington that broadcasts an eclectic mix of alternative rock, hip hop, electronic, roots & blues, world, reggae, and jazz.
Previously, KEXP DJs had to manually track and organize the song information of the music they played and type this into a playlist that would then be posted on the Web site.
KEXP DJs use professional compact disc players, not personal computer compact disc players, so the engineers had to create the CD-ID software to work with this broadcast hardware.

And I think it is worth mentioning that the one time kexp did do Arbitron ratings for the overnight shows, the ratings showed that Greg J was the most listened to out of all the overnight shows - by a 2 to 1 ratio in some instances.
