Like several such radio stations around the country, KFAI subsists on the love of its on-air volunteers for the kind of popular music heard nowhere else on the radio dial, as well as on an infantile left-wing politics that the good stations like KFAI at least divorce from the music programming.

Born and raised in Edina, a suburb of Minneapolis, Richard is essentially self-taught as a pianist and synthesist, aside from a few strategic piano lessons over the years in styles ranging from classical to jazz to gospel.
The word "fresh" also went well with KFAI's slogan, "Fresh Air radio." Richard's show is one of the longest continuously running radio shows of its kind; only San Francisco composer and community radio DJ Carl Stone's show heard on KPFA in Berkeley, CA, has run longer.
In the early days of KFAI, music styles were not assigned time slots the way they are now; about five years ago, Richard's show was moved to the new jazz slot, which remains 10:30 p.m.

The politics of airing such noncommercial fare is implicit: By showing how listeners and on-air personalities can sidestep advertisers, the station demonstrates the small-D democratic potential of volunteering and organizing, of becoming active rather than passive in the culture.
With swelling levels of support, KFAI proves a neglected old point: that "popular" and "commercial" aren't necessarily synonymous.

This is essentially the case with Minneapolis' Beat Radio 97.7, a low-power FM station that had broadcast alternative dance music until it was rudely shut down more than a year ago by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for operating without a license.
on Monday mornings, KFAI (90.3 FM Minneapolis and 106.7 FM St. Paul) now broadcasts "Beat Radio on KFAI," a show featuring the house, techno, drum 'n' bass, acid jazz and disco that had previously been heard on 97.7.
But although the situation is still bleak for Beat Radio, the KFAI show--Freed's glass of water in the midst of a desert--may give it enough sustenance to outlast the FCC and grace local radio dials.
