  93 KHJ!
KHJ was one of the oldest stations in the Los Angeles market, having made its first test broadcast April 11, 1922.
In November of that year, KHJ became a "Class B" station, increasing power from 50 watts to 500 watts and moving to the prestigious Class B frequency of 400 meters, or 750 kilocycles.
KHJ once had a contest where if you counted the number of times Ringo Starr's hits were played one weekend and were the first one to the station with the correct answer, you won dinner for two with Ringo.

For the past several days KHJ was announcing this event; you could send in a postcard to enter a drawing to win a whole set of the 93 records, and that the song countdown would begin with your show at "midnight Thursday." The anticipation led to the inevitable.
By then, KHJ, sadly, wasn't what it once was, and FM was fast becoming mass-appeal, as FM penetration was reaching saturation levels across the country (Dallas was the first market where Arbitron-measured listening to FM exceeded AM listening).
The magic of the KHJ sound was how it maintained a no-clutter sound, so when the personalities executing the format did say something, it really stood out and "made it." Seems today, nobody remembers what it was about that sound that made it so special.

 SEYMOUR PRESENTS
According to Larry Thomas, stage manager for KHJ at the time, the announcer was originally scripted to be very heavy and serious with the intro, then Seymour would come out and destroy it all.
KHJ at the time was noted for it's poor equipment and weak film library, a little less than stellar station that must have been exceptionally pleased when Seymour began attracting viewers.
The KHJ switchboard lit up and angry letters of protest went far to prove that the talent of Larry Vincent as Seymour, an emaciated cynical ghoul, could even beat the voluptuous charms of the pretty vamp with spiders and coffins, all the things that Seymour broke away from.

While KHJ began to fade in the 1970s with the emergence of FM stereo -- even adopting a country format for a time in the 1980s -- Steele remained a popular radio personality clear through the 1990s.
Steele left KHJ in 1973 and hopped around a bunch of L.A. stations -- never staying out of work for too long -- until joining KRTH in 1992, where he was once again paired up in a one-two morning-afternoon punch with Morgan.

Although licenses must be renewed every three years, the KHJ license was simply placed in limbo, while the commission and the parties dawdled through the years.
It not until June 6, 1980 that the FCC finally acted on the 1965 application for renewal of KHJ’s license, as well as the contested applications by RKO for renewal of licenses to operate its stations in New York and Boston.
On July 20, 1988, the commission gave approval to a deal under which Fidelity, which had challenged KHJ’s license renewal, would be awarded the license, and would then transfer it to the Walt Disney Company, which would wind up with the KHJ facilities.
