KIRO's offices and broadcasting center along with its transmitter are located just south of Seattle Center in the Denny Regrade neighborhood.
Beginning in 1969, KIRO initiated major upgrades of its news programming, initiating the now-commonplace "Eyewitness News" format in 1969 with chief correspondent Cliff Kirk and assistant anchor Sandy Hill.
It is one of five local Seattle TV stations seen in Canada on the Bell ExpressVu and StarChoice satellite providers.

KIRO said in a press release Wednesday that monthslong negotiations with Millennium Digital Media over retransmission consent has been completed, though terms of the agreement were not made public.
KIRO announced on an evening newscast in September that Millennium might stop carrying the signal, but the cable operator later said it was KIRO who might force the cable operator to stop broadcasting.
KIRO said in September that St. Louis, Mo.-based Millennium was broadcasting KIRO's signal without paying for it.

Sharify's Murrow was one of two national awards for KOMO's TV newsroom; it also won in the news series category for "War of Words." KOMO and KING won three regional Murrows; KIRO took home two.
