So for now, we took a cab to KL Sentral (yes, thats how they spell it) and booked our sleeper berths for Singapore, after a futile search for the ticket counter in the BB Plaza: our hotel had assured us that there is a Malaysian Railways (KTMB) counter there.
Taxi drivers in KL are total bloodsuckers, just like they are in India, so we resisted a lot of rip off attempts (most taxi drivers are Indians anyway!) and finally managed to get a comparatively honest chap to Chinatown.
KL Sentral was pretty closeby, as we'd seen the previous day.

Takes 28 minutes, upon arrival at KL sentral, go the the Putra Train (exit up the escalators, then go through the exit (insert exit card) then walk straight for about 15 meters and turn left through the walkway, past the back of mcdonalds, etc...
Taxis are relatively inexpensive in KL and since you are travelling with a baby it may not be a good idea to go around town using the trains.
I would personally, if travelling with a 1yo, take the KL Ekspress train to KL Sentral then walk out and keep right and go to the taxi desk (still air cond throughout) and a cab will pull up and drop you door to door to the hotel.

we reach the main terminal, head to check into the airport hotel but decide against it, now instead of taking the 9ringit bus to KL Sentral we take the 35ringit monorail thingy to KL Sentral (never let a woman be in charge of transport plans).
from KL Sentral it was off to another state, Selangor to goto sunway pyramid and sunway lagoon.
Anyway it was another 45minutes or so from KL Sentral to Selangor.

From my understanding, the delays experienced by Komuter users seem to be with regards to clashing intercity and freight trains, and usually this is most severe in KL, from the Jalan Bangsar Junction to Jalan Kuching.
I would recommend a business and operations model like this to be explored, in order to allow this complicated network of operators to integrate.
As much as we would like KL Sentral to be the "transport hub" of the city, we must also recognize that due to physical and technological limitations, some sort of "disintermediation" in terms of routing through KL should be explored.
