KPFA staff and programmers have denounced the de-diversifying tactics of the Pacifica Board and Chadwick, beginning with the dismissal of Sawaya, a Lebanese-American sacked because she did not 'fit in' with the Board's goals.
KPFA staff balked at this ultimatum by citing the need to repair the damage done to studio facilities and the neglect of the transmitter during IPSA security guard occupation of the station.
KPFA staff and supporters openly suspect Pacifica of attempting to bankrupt the station by emptying its coffers to pay for the IPSA security guards, lawyers, and high-priced spin doctors and by returning listener pledges during the lockout.

KPFA has been an important voice for those struggling to free Mumia Abu-Jamal, to oppose U.S. imperialist interventions worldwide, to defend the environment, and to fight for racial, sexual, and social equality.
Resolutions in support of KPFA and free speech were quickly approved by groups ranging from the Berkeley City Council and San Francisco Board of Supervisors to the San Francisco and Alameda County central labor councils.
Community activists and KPFA staff, paid and volunteer, are now engaged in many informal meetings regarding the station's future, plans for programming changes, and how best to prevent the sale and corporatization of this critical voice of dissent.

As KPFA inspired similar stations in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, and Washington, Pacifica found itself overseeing a loose network, and each station had its own fierce disputes with the foundation, generally around labor issues and control of scheduling, with the Foundation always on the more conservative side of the argument.
Larry Bensky, a veteran KPFA programmer, violated Pacifica's gag rule by discussing Sawaya's firing on the air; Bensky was fired in April.
For Pacifica to grant KPFA self-control would have the same effect as Gorbachev's relaxation of control in Eastern Europe; a successful rebellion by KPFA would certainly lead to declarations of independence from the other stations.

KPFA's staff began airing regular public statements, demanding the reinstatement of Sawaya and Bensky and calling for the independent mediation of the dispute.

Dennis Bernstein, the host of KPFA's popular news magazine program, Flashpoints, arrived at the rally with a blue bandanna tied over his mouth in protest of the gag rule, but he soon removed it and served as master of ceremonies for much of the rally.
Without exception, the speakers said Sawaya had been one of the best things to happen to KPFA in many years, and that she was a caring and committed person who listened to programmers' problems, tried to find solutions, and brought out the best in people.

Eight KPFA women are filing with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) to protest sexual harassment by Campanella, as well as a persistent pattern of discrimination based on gender, and the creation of a hostile workplace for women at the station.

KPFA staff and their supporters--warring with Pacifica since Executive Director Lynn Chadwick fired KPFA manager Nicole Sawaya in March--did not have the expected response to the unexpected offer.
