KPIX was the 49th station nationwide to go on the air, the first in Northern California, and the fourth in California.
KPIX became affiliated with CBS on April 18, 1949 and continued to offer a wide range of locally-produced entertainment, informational presentations and public interest shows.
In the early fifties, one of KPIX's innovating programmers, Ray Hubbard, created "The Noon News." The anchors were John Weston, "Channel 5's Guy on the Go," and Wanda Ramey, "Channel 5's Gal on the Go." Ramey was one of the first women news anchors in the country.

KPIX is the first television station in Northern California, signing on the airwaves on 24 December 1948.
KPIX can claim several firsts, including the first noon newscast and the first program in the U.S. to introduce the magazine format to television, "Evening Magazine." KPIX even helped its first competitor, KGO, to get on the air in 1949 as well, and informed viewers on how to best receive the new station.
Today, KPIX is the home to the Bay Area's only newscast at 4:30pm and the only hour-long newscast at 5:00pm.

A fire in Lafayette Sunday killed a local television news personality.Doug Murphy, a news anchor for CBS television affiliate KPIX, was killed in a fire.
Murphy had worked for KPIX for over 20 years, but took a temporary disability leave in the last year.The two-alarm blaze at the single-family home was reported at 7:26 p.m., reported a dispatcher with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
The fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to the structure and $500,000 to its contents, the dispatcher said.
