KSpread - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
KSpread is a free spreadsheet application that is part of KOffice, an integrated office suite for the KDE Desktop Environment.
KSpread native format is XML, compressed with ZIP.
However, KSpread has the ability to import in several spreadsheet formats, including Microsoft Excel, Applix Spreadsheet, Quattro Pro, CSV and OpenOffice.org Calc.

The State of KOffice 1.3 - KSpread
KSpread's handling of large spreadsheets is poor, it is not possible to perform some operations, such as sorting, on entire columns.
KSpread supports cell validation so you can filter data as it is entered into cells and reject inappropriate values, the error messages are customisable so you can make user-friendly templates.
KSpread should now have a sufficient range of functions to cater for most users, this after all is the bread and butter of any spreadsheet.

KSpread printing has been greatly enhanced with the capability to define ranges for printing; and to repeat specified rows and columns on each page (for headings and descriptions).
KSpread can now sort up to three rows or columns together; can store the sorted results somewhere else, to keep the original data intact; and can apply the layout / formatting of the original data to the new location, including adding a row header outside the sort range at the new location.
KSpread function names are now case-insensitive and provide greater compatability with Excel functions.

In KSpread these elementary and natural things are impossible.
My impression of KSpread is that it's well on its way but still has a few serious shortcomings (like navigating cells with the tab and arrow keys).
Kspread was one of the first programs within the package that was usefull and stable enough to actually use it.

Now that I have KSpread, which is free and GPL'ed, I will see if I can use it to do statistical analysis.
KSpread supports many statistical functions, but I only used the basic ones.
Being able to add parts to KSpread can help peers or teachers make comments to the data before the final submission.

KOffice's main applications are KWord, a word-processing and desktop-publishing application; KSpread, a table-oriented spreadsheet application; KPresenter, a presentation application; and Kivio, a flow-charting application.
KOffice's spreadsheet component, KSpread, does not vary a great deal from competitive products, and in form and function, is on a par with older versions of VisiCalc.
KSpread uses a table-like interface where each cell can contain text, numbers, or a computational formula.

It is expected that later versions of KSpread feature scripting and macro recording facilities.
KSpread documents include document metadata such as the name of the author, etc. However, none of this data is written automatically.
The KSpread user has full control over what metadata is to be included and must actively request the inclusion.

 Linux-Magazin - KOffice_eng
The result of their dedicated hacking is the KDE Office Suite (KOffice), which presently consists of a spreadsheet (KSpread), a presentation application (KPresenter), a FrameMaker-like wordprocessor (KWord), a vector drawing program (KIllustrator), a chart and diagram application (KDiagram), a formula editor (KFormula), a simple image viewer (KImage) and an HTML rendering program (KoHTML).
If a user were to select some KSpread data cells and then select the option to create a chart, a KDiagram part would be embedded in the KSpread component that visually displays the data content of the selected cells.
KSpread addresses this fact by supporting Python scripts, which enable users to create and share any desired extensions to KSpread's function library using a popular, object oriented scripting language.

KOffice: The Road Ahead   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The original author of KSpread was Torben Weis, a core KDE developer during its early years.
To implement spreadsheet functionalities properly, KSpread has its own version of the so-called spreadsheet object model which follows the common hierarchial model of spreadsheet: Document, Workbook, Sheet, Cell.
At the moment, the QA for KSpread is being worked on, but it is also expected that the same thing will cover other KOffice applications.

All three programs have automatic cell filling, which detects a pattern in cell data such as the days of the week or an incremental pattern in numbers, then uses the pattern to fill other cells when you drag on the lower right corner of the first cell.
In Calc and KSpread, you can define fills and add them to the patterns that the program can detect -- a feature especially useful when creating templates.
In addition, KSpread has a Series tool in the Insert menu which can be used to define numerical patterns.

Which is why it is redesigned in two parts, well the contact stuff was put into ACT 2000, the project management in python using a mysql python, which gives us a nice crossplatform ability.
What might be better is if KSpread or some other app had the ability to reference a cells or groups of cells by dynamic handles.
Since upgrading to KOffice 1.1.1 and KDE 2.2.2, KSpread is indeed taking ages to load and save a kspread document that I had created in earlier KSpread (KOffice 1.0).

It allows the user to create just about any imaginable kind of chart, with live links to the underlying data, such that when the applications involved are open, a change in the data in one will be reflected in the others.
It accepts data from, for instance, KSpread, and produces live graphs for export to any of the other KOffice applications.

In this case, KSpread got a review that most people would refer to as “a damn good kicking.” I’ve only done it a few times in my writing career, usually reserving such rants for serious irritations.
But this was a group test of spreadsheets: I had to establish some criteria for our tests, so I wrote down a list of all the possible things that someone might require of a spreadsheet.

The only thing that distinguish KWord from KSpread when you launch them is the mimetypes that the opening dialog is able to handle.
But if you click on the KSpread frame, you will see all the KWord menu and toolbar disappear, and all the KSpread menu and toolbar appear.
Since all the features of KSpread are provided by its component, it is exactely as if you were editing the sheet directly in KSpread, as you can see with the third screenshot.
