KStars, a planetarium program written for UNIX machines running the K Desktop Environment, has been ported to OS X via Fink and X11, and offers Mac users a sophisticated but free planetarium program.
KStars has given me my own little virtual sky to stare in awe at, and it makes me want to go live somewhere where I can see the starry sky properly.
I haven't tried KStars yet, but I am currently having lots of fun playing with Celestia for Mac OS X. They recently released a native Cocoa version for OS X, and it's quite rough--but there's an alpha 2 update available on their SourceForge site that makes it tolerable.

One complication is that others on the KStars team want more time to work on their in-progress features before we start a divergent kde4 branch.
However, other devs are already making changes to kstars in kde4, so delaying the port in order to keep the kde4 and kde3.5 branches in sync may be futile.

I have replicated your results w/ K12LTSP 3.1.1; KStars doesn't itself show anything but flness in the "image" window, but I can save it and view it in, say, Eye of Gnome.
My results now are less positive, because now KStars dies with ASSERT statements in qvaluelist.h (some Qt header).

I was hoping KStars could then be used as one of the programs which dynamically generates your desktop background, but I can't get it to work.
That is a funny coincidence because a couple of months before joining the KStars team, I made a small astronomical calculator (a prototype) to learn how to develop with C++, Qt and KDE and I called the project "astrocalc"...

Kstars is the default planetarium of the KDE desktop under Linux.

With a beautiful night sky rendering and the AstroInfo project, a collection of astronomical papers for beginners, KStars is the perfect tool both for experts and novices of sky observation.

IIRC, KStars shipped with similar non-free for commercial use catalogs before and all distributions shipped KDE without a problem.
When you put KStars on a CD and charge for it, you're not charging for KStars itself (if you are, then you're insane) but you're charging for the medium and the costs associated with it, therefore, you're not 'commercilizing' KStars and the whole argument falls apart.
The only situation we have to worry about is someone harvesting the catalog from KStars and incorporating it in their own commercial software.
