European exploration continued in the area around Thebes during the Nineteenth Century, boosted by Champollion's translation of hieroglyphs early in the century.
In tomb KV17, they removed some wall decorations, which are now on display in the Louvre in Paris.
In 1845 – 1846 the valley was explored by Karl Richard Lepsius's expedition, they explored and documented 25 in the main valley and four in the west.

This tomb, before to have the number 17 (KV17 according to the actual numbering of King Valley Tombs, setting by John Gardner Wilkinson in 1830) had the number 6 in Belzoni's numbering ; W in James Burton's one, 12 in Robert Hay's one and finally the number 3 in Champollion's numbering.

The generator and its parts remain in KV18.
The Swiss/German team also worked on the hillside above and around the tomb entrance, and was rewarded by finding what is probably Belzoni’s dump resulting from his clearance of the Tomb of Seti I (KV17).
They recovered some finely carved and exquisitely painted limestone fragments that would seem to have originated in the Seti I burial chamber.
