The Dark Tower is a fantasy fiction, science fantasy, horror, and western themed series of novels by the American writer Stephen King.
The All-World of most of the Dark Tower series seems to be sparsely populated and dangerous, filled with mutants both human and animal, and vast swaths of land are irradiated.

And about that Dark Tower theory that King himself is at the top of the Tower, this seems unlikely to me because, at one point in The Tommyknockers, there is mention made of "that writer from Bangor who fills his novels with dirty words" or something close to that.
In 'Insomnia' and the 'Dark Tower' books it is explained that the Tower is inhabited by the forces of chaos and order and that there are the different levels in the tower, the higher the level the more powerful, influental and manipulative the forces are.

Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla is an entertaining story, but it's one that doesn't feel like it's part of the DK run of books.
If you are a Dark Tower fan (you probably wouldn't be reading this unless you had read the previous 4 books), you should read Dark Tower V to continue on with the adventures of Roland and his Ka-Tet, but I warn you not to get your hopes up.

The tension in the Dark Tower series has built steadily from the beginning and, like in the best of King's novels, explodes into a violent, heart-tugging climax as Roland and his ka-tet finally near their goal.
