Kabbala means "reception", that is, receiving the secrets of Torah from your master, and he from his master, all the way back to Moses.
The Torah is egalitarian; real kabbala academies (which by the way are well-hidden from the public eye) accept students on the basis of their moral righteousness, humility, excellence in Torah, and strict observance of all the Torah's commandments.
The Kabbala Center's "gear" department is the ripoff of the century, and a mockery of authentic Jewish spirituality.

Modern Kabbala recognizes modern sciences and all forms of art as means of communication enabling people to discover their "true" nature and thus become aware of their place in the Universe.
Kabbala Reading and interpretation is based, among others, on the technique of reading cards made by the Reader, who is familiar with his hidden wisdom, symbolism, and metaphors.

There is a renewed interest in kabbala in the West, and much of it is based on Ashlag." Elkayam believes that the inner life of the religious public in Israel is at a crucial juncture today, and that Ashlag may have a key role to play.
In Hasidism and kabbala, Ashlag was a student of the rebbe of Prosov, who belonged to the school of the renowned Kotzker rebbe, and was himself the grandson of one of the great Hasidic masters, "the Holy Jew." But the Prosover rebbe was apparently not his only mentor.
Where much of previous kabbala and Hasidism had emphasized the role of individual acts of intention and piety in uplifting the sparks, Ashlag placed issues of social and economic justice at the very center of the kabbalistic process of tikkun.

Even while using the symbols, quoting the language, repeating the ideas, teaching and maintaining the doctrines of the Kabbala, writers of modern times are generally ignorant of the source of the symbols, language, ideas and doctrines, and hence, naturally, they fail to realize their beautiful significance, far-reaching scope, and more than marvelous harmony.
The philosophy of the Kabbala was expressed in symbols, some of which are in use among the Masonic and other secret fraternities of our day, though much of their ancient force and beauty, which depended very largely and in some cases entirely upon their Hermetic meanings, is lost by erroneous interpretations.
The Kabbala tells us that when man disobeyed His Creator in attempting to steal forbidden knowledge, God punished him by withdrawing from him the Celestial Light in which he had hitherto basked, and God enforced the penalty by depriving him of the Light of Life, and thus of real Life itself.

Kabbala Iyunit (or "Contemplative Kabbala"), the category to which the majority of kabbalistic texts in circulation today belong, attempts to explain the process whereby, through the will of the one infinite G-d, the created finite realm came into being and is constantly directed.

Kabbala Maasit is meant to be employed by only the most saintly and most responsible of individuals and for no other purpose than the benefit of man or implementation of G-d's plan in creation.
