The Kachchh region is an excellent example of a tectonically controlled landscape whose physiographic features are the manifestation of the earth movements along the tectonic lineaments of the Pre-Mesozoic basinal configuration that was produced by the primordial fault pattern in the Precambrian basement (Biswas, 1971).
KMF fault, the Kachchh Mainland Fault), with resistant/recessive lithologies (predominantly of shales) marked by a relief of further ridges, scraps and valleys, capped by an outermost prominent ridge of Dhosa Oolite.
The northern hill range of the Kachchh Mainland is bordered by the Banni plains and the Rann in the north and by the 80-140 m high upland areas in the south.

In the context of Kachchh and Sindh, it must be recalled that at the time these provinces were being described as ‘disturbed’, the British were just beginning to establish a relationship with the Kachchh state which offered a significant foothold for future control over Sindh.
Situated as this area was, on the border between Kachchh and Sindh, somewhat on the periphery of the central authority in Sindh, under a deployment of British forces from Kachchh and related closely to the neighbouring states of Kachchh and Marwar, its political and territorial allegiances were somewhat ambiguously defined.
Thus Kachchh would argue that the districts were closer to them because of cultural and religious affinities while the commissioner in Sindh would reply that TharParkar was an integral partĀ of Sindh as it had always, albeit nominally, rendered allegiance to the court of Sindh.

In this talk, I use ethnographic data from Kachchh, a district in the Indian state of Gujarat to critically engage with Gujarat’s contemporary official self image, formulated in the idea of Gujarati ‘Asmita’ (pride or glory).
This is manifest not merely in the rewriting of textbooks and symbolic political maneuvers such as the rediscovery of the medieval Hindu capital at Patan, but most powerfully in the planned massacres against the region’s Muslim populations in early 2002.
Kachchh lies on the border with Pakistan’s Sindh province and for centuries close travel and trade links have existed between these two provinces.
