Kachemak Bay is one of the richest areas in North America for resident and seasonal shorebirds, surfbirds, seabirds and waterfowl, with over 230 species spending significant time in the Bay area.
Incoming tides push clear nutrient-rich water from upwellings in the Gulf of Alaska into the south side of the Bay, and outgoing tides draw sediment-loaded freshwater from the inner and northern part of the bay.
Kachemak Bay State Park encompasses much of the rugged fjords, lush coastal forests, alpine tundra, and glaciers on the south side of the Bay.

at the mouth of Tutka Bay, is open to the commercial harvest of clams and mussels from January 1 to 5:00 p.m.
Guideline harvest levels (GHL) for individual bays are based only upon surveyed areas and the department's GHL for Peterson Bay was set at 1,000 pounds and the current harvest is 900 pounds.
Therefore, due to the small amount of GHL remaining and the potential for high effort to result in exceeding the Peterson Bay GHL, the department is closing Peterson Bay for the balance of the 2000 calendar year.

The state of Alaska is proposing to lift the ban on clam farming or "on-bottom mariculture" in Kachemak Bay.
Although this practice is allowed in other parts of the state, it is currently prohibited in Kachemak Bay because of the bay's designation as critical habitat.
It has already rewritten the regulations and is giving the public a token 30-day comment period (as opposed to the several-year investigation that closed the bay to clam farms).
