KADENA AIR BASE — A Russian AN-124 Antonov cargo plane lifted off from the runway here Saturday morning headed for China’s Hainan island to retrieve the downed Navy EP-3E Aries II reconnaissance plane stranded there since April 1.
Kadena Air Base is serving as a logistics hub for the retrieval operations, expected to last several weeks.
The planes are operated by Polyot Air Cargo, of Voronezh, Russia.

The base was not named for any of the villages on the site, but for the small town of Osan, about six miles to the north on the main supply route leading to Seoul.
Koreans who were employed at the base at the time believed that the name of Osan was chosen by the Americans because it was much easier to pronounce and spell than the other villages' names.
In addition, Osan Air Base is the only American base in Korea built completely "from scratch" since there had never been a Japanese, Korean or American air strip on the location.
