Kaei (嘉永) was a Japanese era after Kōka and before Ansei and spanned from February 28 (?), 1848 to November 27 (?), 1854.
To commemorate the start of the reign of Kōmei, on February 28 (?), Kōka 5 (1848), the era was changed to Kaei (roughly "Eternal esteem"?)
Kaei 6 (1853) - Commodore Matthew Perry, leading United States' East Indies fleet, arrives, June 3, with four ships

 King Kamehameha
October 4, 1897, a blasting operation to dislodge a rock ledge above the Pali road, buried the remains of the Oahu army at the place where they defended the island they loved.
In 1883, a statue of Kamehameha the Great, was commissioned by King Kalâkaua displaying "Kaei kapu o Liloa" the sacred sash of Liloa.
A second statue was made and this is what stands in front of the Federal Court Building in Honolulu.

This tsuba “combines all of the richness of decoration and treatment which was fast tending toward ornateness in the middle of the nineteenth century when this guard was made.
It is inscribed: Nobuyoshi (kikihan) Oite Tojo Shinobugaoka no yu kan, Kaei ni tsuchi no tori sei wa (“Nobuyoshi of Yedo made this amid the peaceful scenery of Shinobugaoka, in the second [rooster] year of Kaei”; that is, 1849).
On the reverse side is his seal in the form of a koro.
