As industrialization progressed, the share of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries in the total national output declined from 63.5 percent and 31.4 percent, respectively, in 1945 and 1946, to a low of 26.8 percent in 1990.

Kaesŏng Industrial Park is being developed in the region, as a collaborative economic development with South Korea.
The Kaesŏng industrial park is run by a South Korean committee that has a fifty-year lease which began in 2004.
The industrial park is seen as a way for South Korean companies to employ cheap labor that is educated, skilled and speaks Korean which would make communication considerably easier.

Kaesong (Gaeseong) is a city in North Hwanghae Province, North Korea (DPRK), a former Directly Governed City, and the capital of Korea during the Koryo Dynasty.
The city is near Kaesong Industrial Region and it contains the remains of the Manwoldae palace.
Kaesong is connected to Pyongyang and other cities by rail, highways and a dual purpose military and civilian air station.

South Korea hopes that Kaesong will be an escape hatch for hundreds of its labor-intensive companies that can no longer afford to operate in the south, a country that is increasingly middle class.
They noted that Kaesong exempts foreign investors from paying corporate income taxes for the first five years, and that the industrial park's maximum tax rate is 14 percent, which they said was lower than comparable investment zones in China.

The reaction in the region was, needless to say, negative, with even the Republic of Korea suspending shipments of food aid to the DPRK, a big move, I assure you.
However, this has yet to pass, in part due to aid from China and the ROK, and such economic projects as the Kaesong Industrial Region (although its contribution is surely limited).
Besides being a threat to the region, it is also exporting its missile technology for lucre.

The company said the report was false, but the story caught the fancy of the South Korean media, which pondered the possibilities and potential for courtship and even marriage among workers at the Kaesong Industrial Park, which uses cheap North Korean labour to manufacture products for South Korean firms.

Somehow I have gotten onto the mailing list of a certain well-known South Korean organization (which shall remain unnamed on this blog) and they have accidentally sent me an invitation to tour the Kaesong Industrial Park via a one-day trip co-hosted by Hyundai Asan Corporation and the organization who sent me this.
Obviously this is an invitation seeking foreign investment into the Kaesong Industrial Park and from what I've heard, foreign investors aren't taking the bait (and for good reasons, too).
We discussed the Kaesong zone in my int’l business ethics class just last month….the consensus was, in light of a lot of the readings we’d done that I won’t go over here, that any involvement by any company is deeply unethical.
