Kafiristan ("land of the infidels") was a region in Afghanistan whose inhabitants maintained a wild independence until they were subdued by the amir Abdur Rahman Khan in 1896.
They were then converted to Islam and the region became known as Nuristan ("land of the enlightened").
Kafiristan is the setting for Rudyard Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King"

The facts observed and the information collected by him during his sojourn in eastern Kafiristan, and during short expeditions to the inner valleys, are the most trustworthy foundations of our knowledge of this interesting country.

The Dubini’s are in absolutely no hurry to reveal the film’s charms, nor are they particularly rushed to bring Hain’s and Petri’s characters to any sense of inevitable fulfillment.
The beauty of “Journey to Kafiristan” is very much in the journey, just as would be expected from a film and a set of characters with definite literary overtones of the classic order.
Perhaps “Journey to Kafiristan” requires patience for dramatic fruition, but simply enjoying the ride is pleasant enough reward for any viewer’s attention.
