McGrigor explained that the 100-kilometer difference is accounted for by the crossing of the Sudd swamp in southern Sudan being longer than anticipated and by the meanders of the Kagera river in Tanzania and Rwanda as well as the final stretch of the Rukarara leading to the source.
The Rukarara is a tributary of the Kagera River that drains into Lake Victoria, widely known as the Nile's source although the exact point where the Nile starts has been the subject of dispute.
At the end of the nineteenth century, Richard Kandt, a German explorer, found what he said was a source of the Nile in Rwanda's Nyungwe Forest, some 15 kilometers from the source discovered by the Ascend the Nile team on Friday.

The Kagera River forms the border between Rwanda and Tanzania for a distance of 210 km (Hughes and Hughes, 1992), before flowing east along the Ugandan border south and east of Minziro and into lake Victoria.
Minziro, a swamp forest by definition, is greatly affected by the Kagera River and seasonal flooding often results in several feet of water covering the forest floor.
Hughes and Hughes (1992) state that the river and associated swamps and lakes are subject to intensive hunting and fishing.

As part of a larger study to assess the influence of land use on riverine and atmospheric phosphorus (P) loading to Lake Victoria, P sorption characteristics of eight composite bottom sediment samples from the Simiyu and Kagera rivers were determined using the Langmuir equation.
By using Langmuir co-efficients derived from P sorption experiments and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations measured in rivers as well as the in-shore waters of Lake Victoria, it was possible to determine the potential release of SRP into the lake by sediment from the two catchments.
For the 2000 water-year, it was estimated that about 28.65 ² 0.89 (mean ² SD) and 66 ² 6.76 tons of SRP were released into Lake Victoria by sediment deposited by the Simiyu and Kagera rivers, respectively.
