 Long Lancers
The Imperial Navy's search for the ideal destroyer found fruition in the KAGERO class, 19 units of which were built between 1939 and 1941.
Although the KAGEROs were some 72 tons heavier and sported a slightly thicker bridge structure, their stability was improved by lowering the fore quadruple torpedo tube mount and moving its reloads forward abaft the bridge.
At the beginning of the Pacific War the KAGEROs formed the backbone of the Empire's first-line destroyer strength, comprising the 4th, 15th, 16th, 17th and half of the 18th Destroyer Divisions.

Though the preceding KAGERO class is generally considered the top of this line, the YUGUMOs incorporated some significant improvements over even that classic type.
Their main armament of six 5"/50 cal. guns was the same as the KAGEROs, but these were mounted in the new Type D turret capable of 75-degree elevations as opposed to KAGERO's 55-degrees, a considerable advantage in the antiaircraft role which became more vital as the war progressed.
The first 11 destroyers of this class (hull numbers 116-124 and 126-127) were ordered under the 1939 Program.

As with most pre-WW II ships, Kageros were also deficient in anti-submarine and anti-aircraft weaponry.
Over the course of the war these would be remedied, with depth charge capacity increased to 36 and the addition of 4 launchers; anti-aircraft weaponry also increased steadily from only four 25mm machine guns at the start of the war to 28 by the end.

Coming between the foreign designed (and often built) vessels of the earlier part of the century and the innovative Kagero and Fubuki 'Special Type' destroyers of the 1930s, the Minekaze ('Summit Wind') Class was a significant transitional design for the Imperial Navy.
The lead ship of her class and the similar Kamikaze and Mutsuki Classes to follow, Minekaze incorporated a number of distinctive design innovations including a lengthened forecastle with a break forming a well deck immediately forward of the bridge.
Commissioned during the 1920s, the thirteen ships of the Minekaze class were the mainstay of the Imperial Navy destroyer squadrons throughout the decade until gradually replaced by more advanced types.
