Kagoshima Prefecture corresponds to the ancient Japanese provinces Osumi and Satsuma.
This region played a key role in the Meiji restoration, and the city of Kagoshima was an important naval base during Japan's 20th Century wars and the home of admiral Togo Heihachiro.
The City of Sendai, the Towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin and Togo and the Villages of Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki and Kashima were merged to form the City of Satsumasendai (Satsumasendai-Shi).

The village office is located at Kagoshima City outside the village.
The ten islands comprising the village were a part of the former Ryukyu Kingdom and became territory of the Shimazu Family (a vassal of Tokugawa Family) in 1609.
After the Meiji Restoration, these islands were allotted to Kawanabe District of Satsuma Province, then transferred to Oshima District of Osumi Province in 1897.

KAGOSHIMA (Kyodo) Prosecutors will not appeal a court ruling last month that acquitted 12 defendants of buying votes or accepting money for their votes in the 2003 Kagoshima Prefectural Assembly election, sources said Tuesday.
The Kagoshima District Public Prosecutor's Office is expected to announce the decision after consulting with the Fukuoka High Public Prosecutor's Office and the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office, the sources said.
The Kagoshima District Court handed down the ruling on Feb. 23, saying the credibility of the defendants' confessions is doubtful.

KAGOSHIMA (Kyodo) Prosecutors on Monday dropped a case against 10 crew members of a North Korean spy ship who were accused of attempted murder after a shootout in December 2001 with Japanese patrol boats, as they are all dead.
Based on video footage of the shootout, the Kagoshima District Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that 10 crew members were aboard and that all are dead.
The crew members had been charged attempted murder of Japan Coast Guard members and violation of Japanese fishing laws.
