Fukuoka was formerly the residence of the powerful daimyo of Chikuzen, and played a conspicuous part in the medieval history of Japan; the renowned temple of Ieyasu in the district was destroyed by fire during the Boshin war of 1868.

Iizuka (飯塚市;; -shi) is a city located at the confluence of the Honami and Onga rivers in central Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
After the end of Second World War there was a large influx of people into the city as it was one of the few areas that offered a large number of jobs in the coal mines and related fields.
However, its proximity to both Fukuoka city and Kitakyushu city cushioned the effect of the coal industry shutdown and kept the local economy from going into freefall.
