The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai (Violet Lightning Modified) is generally rated as being one of the finest land-based fighter planes fielded by the Japanese during the Pacific War.
Shidens also equipped the 343rd Kokutai the First Air Fleet based at Tinian, and were later based at Shikoku in Japan in defense of the home islands during the spring of 1945.
Shiden Kai fighter aircraft were also ordered into production from the Dai-Nana Kokuki Seisakusho (7th Airframe Works) of the Mitsubishi Jukogyo K. at Tsurashima, from the Aichi Kokuki K. at Eitoku, from the Showa Hikoki K. at Shinonoi, and from the Naval Air Arsenals at Hiro, Omura, and Koza.

The Shiden had the floats replaced with a landing gear with tailwheel, and the Mitsubishi Kasei was replaced with the Nakajima Homare.
In a performance comparisson this source analyses the Shiden as a plane with excellent speed, althought the Mustang and the Corsair both were faster (as was the Frank (Ki-84) at medium altitudes).
The Shiden however had far better high speed handling than the Frank, and can compete with the Corsair in that regard, the Corsair and the Shiden are 'close'.

The N1K1 Shiden, Allied code name George, was a land based version of the Kyofu floatplane.
The Shiden was a private venture to develop what the Kyofu designers felt would be a very high performance fighter capable of outperforming the current fighters.
The Shiden was a welcome addition but had several faults, such as bad brakes and a weak undercarriage.

Kai Shiden is the pilot of the RX-77 Guncannon, crew member of White Base and none to proud of these facts either.
Side Notes: Kai never really enjoyed piloting the Guncannon, but he also never bothered to try and pilot the Gundam or the Guntank, or even a fighter, so it can be guessed that after he learned how to work the Guncannon, he did not want to spend the effort learning how to use anything else.
He seems to love to pick on Hayato the most, being much younger and smaller then him, and also because they tend to work together the most as backup for the Gundam.

Its interesting that the Shiden was known as a very maneuverable aircraft with a special automatic flap system to increase its agility in dogfight.
In December of 1941, the Kawanishi engineering team proposed to their management that it might be a good idea to produce a land-based version of the company's N1K1 Kyofu seaplane fighter.
The Shiden was extremely maneuverable - a fact which is not present at the SH-Shiden.

The airplane was stored at the Paul Garber Facility until NASM loaned it to the Champlin Fighter Museum in Mesa, Arizona, for restoration in December 1991 and the project was completed in November 1994.

While the Kawanishi N1K1-J "Shiden" was at the time of its introduction the outstanding fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Navy and remained a potent adversary throughout the rest of the war, the aircraft had a number of shortcomings that Kawanishi sought to rectify.
Chief among these was the unreliability of the Homare 21 engine, while the wheel brakes were so bad the aircraft was often landed on grass next to a paved runway to reduce the landing roll without brakes.
Kanno first saw combat in the N1K1-J Shiden with the original 343rd Air Group during the invasion of the Marianas in June 1944.

The N1K2 Shiden Kai "Violet Lightning", better known to the allies as "George", was one of Japan's best wartime fighters (at least in potential).
The land-based "George" evolved from the N1K1 Kyofu "Rex" floatplane fighter which was developed in the early 1940's for the invasion of Pacific islands where airbases were nonexistent.
In response to these deficiencies, the N1K2-J Shiden Kai was drastically redesigned into a simpler aircraft with 23,000 fewer parts than the N1K1, including a low-mounted wing, shorter landing gear, and new tail.

The combination of the larger four bladed prop (which replaced the original 3 bladed one from the Kyofu) to get the most horsepower out of the Homare 11 radial engine and the higher mounted mid wing called for some exceptionally long landing gear for ground clearance.
The case of too little too late certainly applied here but considering the deteriorating condition of the war around them and the extensive damage of the B29 raids on the factories the Shiden-Kai proved effective against it's attackers and things might have been different had it been available earlier in the war.
MPM makes a couple of Shiden kits as well but these are more on the limited run side and also I believe one of their earlier efforts.
