Initial reactions from Kiwis in Auckland about Kaikohe were met with quiet looks or gasps or stories of a high crime area where one could not leave a car unlocked.
For the most part, these reactions were by people who had never been to Kaikohe - the reason that travel and actually seeing and living in a place with ones own eyes is so important.

 Entertainment: Movies: Kaikohe Demolition
Set in the quiet and unassuming Northland town of Kaikohe, the film follows three Kiwi blokes (Uncle Bimm, Ben Haretuku and John 'Derby King' Zielinski), as they share their passion for smashing up old cars in the town's "most rock 'n roll event" - the Kaikohe Demolition Derby.
Much of the doco is filmed at the local hot pools where the Uncle, John and Ben relax with their mates after the derby, swap stories, and have a few laughs.
For a relatively poor town with not much going for it at first glance, Kaikohe comes across as a tight-knit, harmonious community, and by the end of the film the characters feel like family.
