The Kaimai Ranges is a mountain range located in the (The smaller but more populous of two main islands of New Zealand; separated from South Island by Cook Strait) North Island of (An independent country within the British Commonwealth; achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1907; known for sheep and spectacular scenery) New Zealand.
The (additional info and facts about Kaimai Railway Tunnel) Kaimai Railway Tunnel runs for nearly nine kilometres under the ranges, making it the longest tunnel in New Zealand.
Construction of the tunnel started from both sides of the range in 1969, they finally met up in 1976.

I pulled over not far off the Highway and rang the landowner to confirm it was still ok to go into GD6-31024, and we were instructed to go to his house upon arrival.
The Kaimai tunnel is approximately 10km long and travels under the Kaimai ranges linking the rail systems in the Bay of Plenty with the rail systems of the Waikato, I understand it is apparently the longest tunnel in the southern hemisphere.
Although we were close to the entrance to the Kaimai tunnel it wasn't visible, nor was the rail line which was nearby.

Raymond had physical ailments ranging from a poisoned toe to shin splints, back pain and numerous lacerations, and to cap it off the antidote the Oban doctor prescribed created stomach problems.
There are several similar small huts in the Kaimais and it’s a real shame that so few are marked on the region’s maps and DOC seems to be allowing them to deteriorate, although keen local hunters and trampers are trying to maintain them.

A total of 400 mm has fallen in the Pinnacles area of the Coromandel in the past 48 hours and is continuing to fall today.

On the 3 July 1963 NAC Flight 441 was lost on a flight from Auckland to Tauranga with a loss of 23 lives - 20 passengers and 3 crew.
Later that night wreckage was spotted in the Kaimai Ranges.
A memorial to the crash was dedicated on 5 July 2003, the 40th anniversary of the crash.

The Wairere Falls set in the bush on the West face of the Kaimai Ranges are the highest water falls in the North Island, drop over the "Okauia" fault in two stages 80 and 73 metres.
The "Okauia" fault is still active, the valley bottom sinking 2mm per year relative to the scarp, and shows what a slow moving fault can achieve over tens of thousands of years.
Several kilometres past the bridge where the Kaimai Railway crosses the road, the main road veers to the right, and a sign can be seen pointing to the Waiere falls.

I asked if we could fly out and around Ngahinepouri where I grew up, and where my Mum still lives, and this was OK with the instructor, basically we had the 20mins to use up and it didnt really matter where we went.
I rang Mum before we left to go out to the aero-club to let her know to watch-out for possible out-of-control aircraft in the district at about 1:30pm.
She told me tonight that she did poke her nose up from the gardening at one point, and even waived, but I was so freeked out keeping the plane on the level I didnt really have time to wave back.

Native vegetation comprises 15 percent (or 25,062 hectares) of Matamata-Piako of which 11.5 percent (or 20,262 hectares) is held within the Department of Conservation Estate, 12.6 hectares in Council owned reserve and 4,387.6 hectares lies in private ownership.
Within Matamata-Piako the Kaimai Forest Park comprises an area of 14,670 hectares, and the Kopuatai Peat Dome an area of 5313 hectares (approximately one third).

The plane had flown into a bushed hillside in the Kaimai Range, close by Matamata.

Occurring from Te Paki south to Pukanui (near Kawhia) in the West and in the northern Kaimai Ranges in the East.
Over much of its former range it has been heavily logged, such that the best stands now only occur in the Coromandel and Waitakere Ranges, on Great and little Barrier Islands, and in Northland at Waipoua, Trounson, Omahuta, Puketi, Herekino, Warawara and Radar Bush forests.
Some people believe that the hill and range occurrences, which is where most stands can now be seen, are relictual stands not truly favoured by the species, but merely examples of where it can grow, and of course locations where it was usually left because log extraction was less feasible.

The easiest of these is a 3 hour return walk to the Wairere Falls (150 metre drop) which you walk along an old Maori track which once provided a trading link over the ranges.
