The town has a population of around 3500, and it is (after Taupo) the second largest population centre in the Taupo District.
It is located close to the edge of the Kaimanawa Ranges and ten kilometres north of the stretch of State Highway 1 known as the Desert Road.
The town grew rapidly during the 1960s when it was a base for the Tongariro Hydroelectricity project, but the population has remained stable due to the town's handy location for tourists.

The landscape and habitats in the Kaimanawa Ranges are both ancient and unique.
DoC works with the Kaimanawa Wild Horse Preservation Society Inc. to organise as many new homes for the horses as possible, before they are mustered.
However the Kaimanawa Wild Horse Preservation Society no longer wishes to work along side welfare organisations and home checks will no longer be performed by qualified animal welfare officers.

Its catchment ranges in width from 18 to 27 miles.
