KAIMON, Kagoshima -- A teacher at a public junior high school here has come under fire for threatening to slash a student with a paper cutter after he failed to respond quickly enough when asked during class about his favorite color, it was learned Saturday.
In response to protest from the parents of one of the students, Takashi Fukumoto, the principal of Kaimon Municipal Junior High School questioned the teacher, who admitted to the allegations.
At the school where he had worked until he was transferred to the Kaimon Junior High School in April, the teacher threatened to his students with a ruler if they could not answer questions during his classes.

I went to Kagoshima in golden week of May. Japan has long days off (about a week) in early May. We got on the ferry from Kagoshima to Yakushima Island.

South of Kagoshima, the great claw of the Satsuma Peninsula extends into the East China Sea, to culminate in a perfect, cone-shaped mountain and a clutch of onsen resorts.
The centre of this small town contains a strip of beautifully preserved samurai houses, each with a diminutive traditional garden, but it's perhaps best known as the air-base from which kamikaze suicide pilots took off during the closing days of World War II.
The easiest and quickest way to reach Ibusuki is by JR train or Toppy jetfoil from Kagoshima - both offer good views across Kagoshima Bay to Sakurajima and the Sata Peninsula.

This weekend I climed Mount Kaimon, a 900-plus-meter-high volcano on the southern tip of the Satsuma peninsula (the western half of Kagoshima; I live on the Osumi peninsula).
The hike was about 3.5km each way on trails that they would not allow people on in the states...
Sunday we stopped at a rotenburou, an outdoor onsen, on the slopes of Kagoshima's famed active volcano, Sakura-jima.
