Kainantu has basic facilities such as a school, hospital, police station, district court, cinema and service stations but like many towns in PNG has deteriorated since its colonial days.
Caution - Kainantu, like many towns in PNG, has a well deserved reputation for crime and lawlessness.

 Threat to Shut Kainantu Gold Mine
A landowner group of the Kainantu gold mine has threatened to stop the mine unless the operator honours its commitments in an agreement with them.
In the petition, the association warned that if the demands were not addressed satisfactorily, the mine would be forced to halt all activities and the National Government would be petitioned to forfeit several licenses to the Kainantu Gold Project held by HPL to the Bilimoia Landowner Trust Company.
A spokesman for Highlands Pacific said the company had met all its obligations under the agreement to all the stakeholders in the project.

Kainantu hospital Nursing Sister Julian Matelpatalrea said of the 132 cases reported, 40 of the victims were children below the age of 10, 59 were 19 years or younger, while 33 were above 20.
She said 75 of the attacks occurred there, while 26 were reported in Kainantu town, and 31 in other parts of the district.

Highlands Pacific Ltd has started processing ore at its Kainantu gold mine and is confident of shipping the first concentrate to Japan within weeks.
The first shipment is expected to leave for Japan middle of next month with the process plant then expected to ramp up to "design criteria" by March.
Highlands' US$58 million (K187 million) Kainantu gold mine had been flagged to produce around 115,000oz of gold per annum with a mine life of at least 10 years, shipping about 21,500 tonnes of gold concentrate averaging 180gms per tonne annually.

Located in the Eastern Highlands Province of PNG, the Kainantu Gold Project is being developed by PNG based mineral resource company, Highlands Pacific and is expected to produce approximately 115,000 ounces of gold contained in 21,500 tonnes of gold rich concentrate per year, for its initial mine life of four and a half years.
Embedded in a steep mountainside, the Kainantu mine consists of two portals, the first is at 800 metres above sea level, and the second is at 1320 metres above sea level and only accessible by helicopter.
Since access to the mine site was extremely difficult Aggreko needed to tailor a power package that could be installed as close as possible to the site, and would supply power to the two portals as well as the processing plant and accommodation located 7 kilometres away, at 440 metres above sea level.

The company says the grant of the mining lease will remove one of the remaining development hurdles and move the project forward towards the objective of commencing construction in the 4th quarter 2002.

THE Kainantu district office was burnt to the ground over the weekend, with tenants Education and Welfare Divisions losing valuable documents and files.
The building, which was built during the colonial administration, houses Kainantu Welfare office and Kainantu District Education services.
Police said fortunately the fire did not spread to adjacent buildings which house the new the Kainantu District Administrator's office and the newly opened district treasury office.
