Kainuu (Swedish: Kajanaland) is a region (maakunta / landskap) of Finland.
It was necessary to populate Kainuu with Finnish farmers because the area was threatened from the east by the Russians.
The immigrants to Kainuu were mainly from Savo and because of that the Kainuu dialect is very close to the Savo dialect.

 Metsähallitus - People of Kainuu Satisfied with Metsähallitus as Steward of State Lands
In summer 2003, people living in the Kainuu region in northern Finland were asked about their views on the significance and use of local state-owned forests.
Few of the region's inhabitants participated in the natural resource planning process, but more than 70 per cent were aware of planning concerning state-owned lands and more than half found that there is enough information available on the use and management of state-owned lands.
Metsähallitus administers some 42 per cent of the forests in the Kainuu region, and some 16 per cent of the region's state-owned forests are under protection in official protection areas or set-asides defined in landscape ecological planning.

Kainuu had traditionally been an important trading area for the merchant houses and sawmills of Oulu, the peasant farmers of that region selling their tar to the Oulu trading houses, which also either ran sawmills or traded in sawn timber.
This region was not the main object of such transactions on a national scale, however, as the land involved there amounted to only 7.6% of that acquired by such means over the whole country.

Kainuu tar was used to waterproof merchant and naval ships of great imperial powers like Great Britain, France and Spain.
In addition to its function as a military outpost, the castle was the seat of government for the region and was used as a prison.

The first meetings were held in the Finnish region of Kainuu and the last one, in spring 2002, was organised by the French department of Jura.
Young people from the regions affiliated with FONDELF, i.e., Galicia (Spain), Extremadura (Spain), Jura (France), Kainuu (Finland) and Värmland (Sweden) were invited to participate in the European Forest Week in Suwalki Region.Dzukija (Lithuania) and Müritz (Germany) were also invited as friendly ones to the organizers.
According to the project, the participants and one tutor from each region were staying all at the organisers expense.

According to information from the game district of Kainuu Province in northeastern Finland, 23 wolves were killed in the area between October and March.
Next winter we are planning a wolf census in the region along with the RKTL.
Ten of the dogs had been taken from their yards, while the rest were mainly killed in connection with a hunt.

The Kainuu Environment Centre contributed in the project by arranging the accommodation and finishing the workstations in Takkila.
The Kainuu region in north-eastern Finland was given a high priority when choosing the workshop site due to the well-preserved local tradition of wooden handicrafts, forestry and small-scale industry based on wood.
Before the so-called Enclosure (a general parcelling out, declared at an ordinary parliamentary session in 1757 and started in Kainuu region in the 1840s) the settlers were relatively free to inhabit the areas owned by the state.

At a joint meeting in Kajaani on December 17, 2004 Metsähallitus explored the views of its regional stakeholders on the issue of conservation of state-owned forests in northern Finland.
Ecological, social and economic perspectives were put forward by the stakeholders as they expressed their views on how the conservation of state forests in the Kainuu Region, Ostrobothnia and western and eastern Lapland should be developed.
At the next big stakeholder group meeting in March, the regional stakeholder groups involved in the dialogue process hope to receive information on the different sides’ viewpoints regarding the total land area to be excluded from forestry operations as a result of the process.
