Kaipa - left empty frame   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
KAIPA was the leading Scandinavian progressive band in the 70's and recorded five albums during the years 1975 - 1982.
Kaipa, however, intended to differentiate themselves from past and present styles, producing a personal and original music taking its inspiration from the past yet looking to the future.
As was the case during their heyday, Kaipa is a force once again with Hans and Roine at the helm.

Kaipa - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Kaipa's reliance on exceptionally long and drawn out songs means they'd darned well better put something in there that keeps one's attention, but instead they just throw in a variety of keyboard passages and a lot of really goofy lyrics.
Kaipa serves no purpose but to agitate and beleaguer poor music journalists who, at one point, thought the concept of getting free CDs in the mail for review was pretty neat.
Kaipa seems to think that their ponderous, cumbersome song structures are progressive, when all it is repeating similar concepts over and over.

Kaipa, one of the leading Swedish progressive rock bands in the '70s, was put on ice during the '80s and '90s.
Kaipa's brand of prog-rock is based in the folk tradition and expanded with symphonic touches.
Kaipa is Hans Lundin on keyboards, mellotron, Hammond organ, synthesizers, and vocals; and Roine Stolt on electric and acoustic guitars.

What Kaipa did in the past was some sort of progressive rock with swedish lyrics.
I knew I was gonna miss the old Kaipa singers, as well as Hasse Fröberg (from the Kings) but as soon as I heard the voice of Lundström I didn´t care.
Kaipa has been brought to life, and let us just hope that this is not just a one time experience.

This year, Kaipa (with Eileen Tabios) was awarded the 2002 Potrero Nuevo Fund Prize, administered by New Langton Arts, for the project, Intercept: To Thwart, Cradle, Exchange, a project promoting Asian American literary arts.
Kaipa is also working on a play to be performed as part of Intercept at the Theater of Yugen (San Francisco) in January 2003, as well as a prose piece titled Was.Or.Am.
Kaipa lives in San Francisco, where she serves on the board of Rova:Arts (the nonprofit umbrella of the Rova Saxophone Quartet), and is a co-curator of the Alliance of Emerging Creative Artists (www.thisisaeca.org).

We were working close together in Kaipa during the 70’s because we shared the same taste for this special type of music and shared the same cultural/musical references and influences.
The three first Kaipa albums will be remastered and re-released on Inside Out.
The plans today are to make a box including these albums and an additional CD with live and unreleased material.

This was definitely a great experience, and I think KAIPA is a result of being a part of all this.
The intentions behind the new Kaipa album are pure: to transform my basic musical ideas and feelings, and allow the outstanding musicians to bring their own colours and dimensions to bear on of this work of art.
I also like the band Iona, they have this same folk music influence as Kaipa, but they are actually not a new band.

It's also no secret that Kaipa is one highly evolved progressive outfit that has influenced the modern prog scene.
Kaipa's music and lyrics have always been uplifting as well as intriguing, and Keyholder shows no qualms with that quality.
If you have been paying attention, then you also know that he is fronting another impressive prog group by the name of Ritual (and if you haven't yet, you need to get that album).

Kaipa was a Swedish band that released their self-titled debut album in 1975.
Kaipa's three first albums stand as the high-point of Swedish symphonic prog in the 1970's.
Lundin's ballad "Visan i sommaren", "Hairless Heart"-like "Igelkötts död" and especially the spooky "Taijigan", laced with wobbly Mellotron, are among Kaipa's finest works, while Stolt's "Total Förvirring" is the blueprint for his later Flower Kings adventures, and "Sist på Plan" closes the album with some of the most incendiary guitar/synth duelling the band ever recorded.

Kaipa is now living it’s second breathe, as they were very active in the late 70’s and early 80’s, took an oblivious path for 20 years and came back in 2002 with the excellent Notes from the past.
Kaipa was one such project, 2002 saw Roine Stolt re-unite the one time Swedish 70's progrock band for the Notes From the Past cd.
Roine Stolt is mostly contributing as the bands guitarists and co-composer, his trademark vocals are kept to a minimum thanks to the vocals of the other members, which is an important key here if Kaipa sincerly wants to be Kaipa, and not another variation of the FK's.

Kaipa are largely notable these days for being Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings' first band, when he was in his teens.
Having recruited a singer, the band wrote a bunch of shorter, though still progressive material, with largely their own sound, although a Focus influence is apparent in places, as with their countrymen Dice.
After a 20-year layoff, Kaipa reformed around 2001, or at least, Lundin (fresh from his work with Hagen) and Stolt got back together to breathe fresh life into the name.

I need to mention that the year this album was released was not 1975 but 2005.
The 75 reference comes from the year Kaipa released their first album and this is a celebration of that event.

However, this Lindberg only bore the same name as their previous bassist, but was not the same man. Before 1981 was through, Bergman would leave the group.
So, Kaipa was looking for a new drummer.

Out of the Kaipa ashes The Flower Kings was founded, yet guitarist Roine Stolt remained good friends with Kaipa keyboard player Hans Lundin, so much so that both musicians agreed to unleash yet another Kaipa album to the world.
In fact, Kaipa released two other albums that in every respect were not worth being re-issued on CD because they didn't contain enough good material to get the CD treatment.
The distinctive guitar sound of Roine will nevertheless take your mind back to some of the Flower Kings highlights, which I feel is an obvious reaction, as FK has been going strong for the last couple of years, not forgetting Transatlantic, of course.

 KAIPA discography, MP3 and reviews
In their early years, KAIPA was one of Sweden's best seventies symphonic prog bands.
The first three albums ("Kaipa", "Inget Nytt Under Solen" and "Solo") are a beauty and probably most indicative of their style - dreamy symphonic rock with simple, yet very effective melodies and a great deal of emotion.
With the new album "Keyholder", Hans LUNDIN and Roine STOLT perform some new music, searching for a new level of progress, yet echoing fragments of the glorious 70's, trying to bring the new Kaipa-sound to a higher level.

While the vocals on nearly all of Kaipa’s older works are in Swedish, the sound of the band bore a distinctively Camel-like feel with tinges of Genesis and Yes thrown in for good measure.
While most of the album bears the distinctive songwriting voice of Lundin – consistent from the earliest Kaipa material through Notes From the Past to this album – it is perhaps the collectiveness of this album that lends it a harder edge than prior outings.
There was preciously close to nothing on Notes From the Past that might not have been done in Kaipa’s earlier heyday.
