Kaipara environment groups are opposed to the Minister of Conservation, Chris Carter's recent approval of an application for the early expiry of the aquaculture moratorium over an area in the Kaipara Harbour.
Kaipara Forest and Bird, the South Kaipara Environmental Protection Trust, and the Guardians of the Kaipara made submissions opposing the early expiry.
"Kaipara communities were not consulted on the size, location, or appropriateness of the aquaculture management areas before these were imposed on the Kaipara Harbour by the Auckland Regional Council (ARC)", says Kaipara Forest and Bird convenor, Suzi Phillips.

Kaipara District Council is proposing the introduction of a Liquor Control Bylaw, year round, 24 hours a day in specified public places in Dargaville and over the New Year period in Mangawhai.
Previously, Kaipara District Council, in conjunction with the NZ Police, has introduced and enforced temporary liquor controls in Mangawhai and Dargaville to control the problem of liquor in public places.
The Kaipara District Council resolved that the introduction of a Liquor Control Bylaw was the most appropriate way to address the perceived issues surrounding the possession and consumption of liquor in public places.

This area draws sand carried by coastal currents and is 2km to 4km outside the heads of Kaipara Harbour, in an area known as the Graveyard because more than 100 sailing ships have been lost there.
The 60sq km area of sand in the ebb tide delta was estimated at 12 billion cubic metres and was replenished by tidal currents moving sand up and down the coast.
Northland Regional Council harbour warden for the Kaipara Harbour and Ripiro Beach Des Subritzky said the application would be of great interest to people in the area.

On the southern boundary the peninsula forms one side of the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour, offshore, swift tides mark the meeting place for the harbour waters and rollers from the open sea.

KAIPARA - The Health Ministry will start spreading a growth regulator around Kaipara Harbour in Northland from tomorrow to try and eradicate exotic mosquitoes which can carry a debilitating disease.
Southern saltmarsh mosquito larvae were found in the Rodney District of Kaipara Harbour in February last year.
NZ Biosecure, whose staff have been involved in the control and eradication of the mosquito in the Tairawhiti and Hawke's Bay regions, have been contracted to run the southern saltmarsh mosquito programme and have set up base in the Kaipara area.
