Topic: Kaiserstuhl

Kaiserstuhl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kaiserstuhl (literally "emperor's chair") is a small group of hills of mostly volcanic origin in the Upper Rhine Valley in southwest Germany, northwest of Freiburg.
The Kaiserstuhl features one of the warmest climates in Germany, with the town Ihringen being the town with the highest average temperature in Germany.
The area is also home to many rare species of plants and animals: the variety of orchids in Kaiserstuhl, for example, is one of the greatest in Europe with over 30 species having been registered.

Northwest of Freiburg, the Kaiserstuhl, a volcanic outcrop covered in loess, rises up sharply in the valley of the Rhine - between the slopes of the Black Forest and the Vosges mountains.
The Badberg, central elevation of the Kaiserstuhl and thought to be the centre of the volcano, is an important nature reserve famed for its exceptional number of wild orchids.
The wines that grow on the fertile, weathered volcanic soils and in the Mediterranean climate of the Kaiserstuhl are full of frui and fire, have a complex nose and a refreshing minerality.

Fire in Landscape Management in Germany: The Kaiserstuhl Area in Baden Württemberg State
The study is currently conducted in the Kaiserstuhl area, an old volcano fragment dating back to the Tertiary located in the Rhine valley in southwest Germany.
Effects of different fire types on the composition, structure and distribution of the vegetation types of the open, meadow-like ecosystems; response of some typical species which immigrate and extend since the beginning of the succsession-period 20 years ago; and temperature and soil moisture regimes on burned and unburned plots.
Earlier investigations conducted in the 1980s on the slopes of the Kaiserstuhl area indicate that animals (mainly arthropoda) in the grass-layer are killed by fire in the wintertime.

Sheltered by the Vosges mountains and blessed by its southerly position in the Upper Rhine Graben, the Kaiserstuhl is Germany's warmest region and also has the most hours of sunshine.
This is prime growing territory for the Burgunder family of grapes: the Blauer Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), the Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and the Grauburgunder (Pinot Grigio).
Today, the distinctive Grauburgunder is grown on around 1000 hectares in the Kaiserstuhl region - around a quarter of the Kaiserstuhl's total grape-growing area.
