  Kaitoke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kaitoke is a locality in the southern North Island of New Zealand.
The nearby Kaitoke Regional Park was the filming location for exterior shots of Rivendell for the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Hutt River has its source to the north of Kaitoke, and much of the land in the vicinity is used as a water supply reserve.

 Kaitoke to Holdsworth Hike
The classic hiking route between Kaitoke in the south of the Tararua Ranges and Holdsworth (about halfway up the eastern side of the ranges) is a popular tramping (hiking) trip taking 2-3 days.
The usual direction for the route is from Holdsworth to Kaitoke - this makes the steepest part of the track into an abrupt descent.
However both times that I have done the route, I have travelled from Kaitoke so that will be the direction in which the track will be described.

The $14.2 million project to straighten a 5.5km section of State Highway 2, between Kaitoke and Te Marua, got under way on October 29 last year with the turning of the first sods.
By the end of the project more than 500,000 cu m of soil will have been moved in order to straighten the road, and move existing dips and rises.
The road climbs from a level of 225m above sea level at Kaitoke to 280m at the summit before dropping to 100m at Te Marua.

The purpose of the national Honda TreeFund programme is to reinvest in the community by funding the planting of native trees to offset some of the motor vehicle emissions and their impact on the environment.
Honda Cars Wellington agent, Richard Hall says the Kaitoke Regional Park planting is an ideal local example of projects the Honda TreeFund is involved in.
