Porirua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was the name given in the 19th century to a land registration district that stretched from Kaiwharawhara (or "Kaiwarra") (on the north-west shore of Wellington Harbour) northwards to and around Porirua Harbour.
A road climbing the hill from Kaiwharawhara towards Ngaio and Khandallah is still called "Old Porirua Road".
In the 19th century a small European settlement grew up, partly because of the need for a ferry across the harbour.

Tawa History - Articles on Old Porirua Road by Bill Secker
The ancient Maori track form Kaiwharawhara on the shores of Whanganui-a-Tara to Porirua ascended to the summit of Paerau Hill along a spur, which is to the right of the flagstaff.
Kaiwharawhara, which up to 1858 was the junction of the Porirua Road and communities to the north, provides another interesting chapter concerning the early formative years of the Wellington settlement.
At the invitation of the Hutt Valley chief Kapatarea, Te Kaeaea left Kaiwharawhara in 1844 to reside in a new pa, Makaenuku.

The Kaiwharawhara Pa, at the mouth of the Kaiwharawhara Stream was inhabited before and during early settlement days by a tribe of Ngati-tama who migrated through the Manawatu from Taranaki to eventually settle in the Kaiwharawhara area.
The Kaiwharawhara Kainga was principally a Te Ati-Awa settlement although Taringa Kuri was a Ngati Tama Chief.
This was followed in 1845 by the construction of a road up the gorge which was commissioned by Captain Daniel, whose "Trelissic k Farm", named after his estate in Cornwall, was at the head of the gorge.

One train did not stop at Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga and Petone but the code (6?) is not listed in the timetable.
The codes are not listed in the 1980 timetable so their use was presumably discontinued sometime in the 1970s.

 Wetland Restoration
In 1870, the stream was dammed at the lower end of the valley to create a 5ha, 500m long lake.
This, together with forest clearance and urban development downstream along the length of Kaiwharawhara Stream, has resulted in serious disturbances to the original freshwater stream habitat.
Despite considerable work downstream to improve the habitat, the underground mid-section is unlikely to ever be restored back to a quality charactersitic of an unmodified stream.
