  : RevolutionSF - Girl Genius : Review
The art of this world, and Foglio's art in general, is a mix between the pseudo-realism of most superhero comics and the cartoonishness of Disney or manga.
Sure, Foglio uses them to individually flesh out the events that run the next few pages, but each character drawn implies an entire story of his or her own rather than just being a doodle to take up the blank space.
What Phil and Kaja Foglio have created is, in their own words, a "gaslamp fantasy." The world is undeniably fantasy, but technology takes the place of magic.

Kaja   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
I fell in love with the whimsical and charming artwork of Kaja Foglio sometime in the early Nineties when I first saw her Magic: The Gathering work.
Kaja mentions that the troll resembles her husband, Phil Foglio (another terrific artist), and that the girl is somewhat like Kaja.
Her expression, one of the things which Kaja's art captures so well, is mischeivous and wise simultaneously.

The Foglios have cleverly left Agatha as much in the dark as the reader, though, so as each new surprise is unleased upon the readers, you're able to empathize with poor Agatha as she puzzles through it as well.
Foglio's clearly having a ball, though, drawing all the little "clanks" (self-propelled robots) that Agatha creates; with no two quite alike and each one looking crazier than the earlier, Foglio's imagination is very much on display.
Girl Genius is published quarterly by Airship Comics (a branch of Studio Foglio); there's also a collection of the first three issues (in fl and white—like Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz", things shift to color as Agatha's world expands and changes forever) also available at Mars Import.

KAJA: I met Phil while I was still in college, so I hadn’t actually done anything professional at all, whereas he’d been doing professional work for many years.
KAJA: It also came about in a time when I was going through piles of drawings and sketches, and noticing that there were a lot of weird fantasy airships and steampunky Victorian creatures and aliens with little walking sticks.
KAJA: That’s how I learned to do comics in the first place, by going down to the comics store, and I stood way back and I looked at what catches my eye and asked what about it caught my eye and why do I like it.

The Comics Get Serious--Review of What's New with Phil and Dixie 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
As Foglio was involved with the company, Wizards of the Coast (WOTC), almost from the beginning, he was in a unique position to observe the progress of the game from simple entertainment to craze--and to make fun of it at every step.
Kaja Foglio supplied little footnotes for the stories and one panel of art in the new story.
Anyway, that's how good this book is: parody it may be, but it's a friendly and appreciative parody, saving its sharpest barbs mostly for the excesses of the players and displaying a love of the game and a real sense of its captivating qualities.

Phil Foglio’s cartooning skills are as good as ever and he imbues his characters with a zany expressiveness that works with the Foglio’s frenetic storytelling style.
Phil Foglio’s robots are inspired and give the reader the impression they’ve stepped right into a Victorian steampunk world.
I do have faith in Phil and Kaja Foglio’s storytelling skills and am sure that more will be revealed as the series progresses.

Combining steampunk technology and the wacky sense of humor that has defined the Foglios' work for the most part, this is definitely something different from most of what's out there.
The notion of "Sparks" also gives a touch of super-hero flavor to the book, as the lead characters and their villains are set apart from humanity by accident of birth, and have abilities that make them more powerful in the society where they exist.
Agatha is a klutz and a loser in many ways, but she has a nice core personality and a determination which would mark her as the protagonist even if she wasn't on the cover with her name in the title.

Phil and Kaja Foglio, text, and Brian Noddy, Brian McNabb, and Laurie E. Smith, illustrations, Girl Genius, issues 1-10
Some people call it steam punk, but creators Phil and Kaja Foglio call Girl Genius a "gaslamp fantasy," and I have to say that I'm becoming awfully fond of the term.
Phil and Kaja (which is pronounced like "Kaya") strike a wonderful balance between two extremes I've grown to dislike lately in hero tales.
One is the image of the hero as a nobody, an anyman, a normal person who just stumbled into the job; in its place, this is fine, but it tends to cause the mythic quality of a story to get lost.
