The Kakanui Mountains to the south, the Maerewhenua catchment to the west, the Waitaki catchment to the north, and the Pacific to the east border the area, and all water beneath its surface is classed as Kakanui Catchment water.
Then the outflow from the aquifer into the Kakanui reversed and 50ls-1 was lost from the Kakanui River as opposed to the 69ls-1 it gains currently.
The Kakanui River is used for recreation, food gathering, recreational fishing, boating and swimming, all activities depending on a minimum flow of 400ls-1.

Palaeeudyptes antarcticus Huxley 1859, from Kakanui, North Otago
The first fossil penguin recognised to science was an incomplete but dramatically large ankle bone from Kakanui, in coastal Otago.
The bone was acquired by Government Agent Walter Mantell during his travel along the Otago coast in late 1848, and was sent to Britain where it was studied by the pre-eminent paleontologist T.H. Huxley.
Finally, we aren’t even sure of the age of the fossil; it is probably from the soft white Ototara Limestone which, at Kakanui, spans the Eocene/Oligocene boundary – in the range 32-34 M years.

Didymo hits North Otago's Kakanui River - 25 May 2007 - NZ Herald: New Zealand National news
The Department of Conservation is concerned about the impact on the lowland, longjaw galaxias which finds its last refuge in a tributary of the Kakanui, the Kauru River.
DOC freshwater ranger Pete Ravenscroft said at this stage didymo was an unknown threat to the longjaw, but it had the potential to be very significant.
"This is to gauge where didymo is in the Kakanui and whether or not the invasive water weed can be controlled in that river," Mr Ravenscroft said.

Description of the occurrences of basic igneous rocks further south of the Kakanui River may be prefaced by the comment that here the sequence of Upper Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary sediments is more varied and extensive than in the Oamaru District north of this river.
It would seem, therefore, that the base of the Waiarekan tuff at Moeraki is older than that portion of this formation developed west of Oamaru to which Finlay and Marwick (1940) have assigned an early Kaiatan (Lower Oligocene) age.
The basalt and dolerite sheets of the Maheno-Government Hill-Little Table Hill group, of Mount Charles, and of the Moeraki group dip eastward with a general inclination less than that of the Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary sediments with which they are associated, and are accordingly in contact with younger sediments as they extend eastwards.

Rock Snot Threatens Food Resource of Rare Native Fish - Science - RedOrbit
The Department of Conservation (DOC) yesterday announced that didymo had appeared in the lower reaches of the Kakanui River, the "last refuge" of the threatened longjaw galaxias species.
DOC, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research and Biosecurity New Zealand are now studying how well-established the didymo is in the river and whether it is present in other parts of the Kakanui or its tributaries.
Ravenscroft said DOC would like the public to stay out of the Kakanui River system until the study was complete and when they do use the river to follow the rules of checking, cleaning and drying their gear to contain the spread of the rock snot.
