The views from almost anywhere on Kala Pattar of Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse are truly spectacular on a sunny day.
The ascent of Kala Pattar begins at Gorakshep (5,288m), a small outpost that exists only to cater to trekkers and climbers.

The dark "mound" in the photo is Mt. Kala Pattar taken from Gorak Shep at 17,000 ft. This is the last tea house lodge before Mt. Everest Base Camp at 17, 600 ft. Mt.
Kala Pattar stands at 18, 450 ft. The altitude is deceiving from the view since the altitude of the mountains surrounding Kala Pattar are so much higher.
Kala Pattar offers the best views of Mt. Everest, particularly since Mt. Everest cannot be seen from Everest Base Camp.

Kala Pattar means "Black Rock" in Hindi and is the most popular view point for Mount Everest and the Khumbu icefall, the top is 5600m and the highest point we were to be at on our trek..
Even though the climb from Lubuje to the top of Kala Pattar was a 600 meter gain, and potentially dangerous, by climbing high and sleeping lower then you have hiked up in the day we had done the best thing you can do to aid acclimation.
However the true majesty of Kala Pattar was the incredible views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Pomori, and the Lhola Pass between Nepal and Tibet, as well incredible glaciers, turquoise lakes, and numerous other peaks.

The climb of the Kala Pattar (5.545 m) was simply impossible in that hellish weather and we decided to turn back before we got stuck to join the rest on their way down.

After an absolutely freezing start to the day - up at 4.30am, we were off to Kala Pattar.
It's a long walk to Gorak Shep, the last village before Everest Base Camp, walking through Glacial scree and snow, the going is tough in stages, although it doesn't compare to the struggle up Kala Pattar.

After a brief descent into an ancient lake bed of sand, the ascent of Kala Pattar begins with a series of short switchbacks followed by a long upward traverse over a mostly smooth trail.
It was a difficult decision as it meant that Everest base camp was out for me (it turned out that no one in our group attempted to go to EBC) but I was really looking forward to Island Peak and thought that not going down now could seriously jeopardize my chances on Island Peak.

 Nepal Trip
I worried that it might be impossible to climb up to Kala Pattar the next morning due to the accumalation.
The only logical course of action was to attempt to go some of the way up Kala Pattar and view the sunset that we would not likely see due to the clouds.
It was amazing, but now I could see the 2nd viewpoint of Kala Pattar (there's 2) at 5600 meters and I had to get closer.

I flew into Lukla, walked to Gokyo, over the Cho La pass to Lobuche, up to Kala Pattar, and then back to Lukla.
Some others who walked with me had spent a week or so walking from Jiri, and by the time we got to Gokyo they didn't have the energy to go over the Cho La pass (apart from a couple of guys).
Apparently it is easier to go over the Cho La pass from Kala Pattar rather than Gokyo.

Kala Pattar (5,545m/18,222ft): our trek from Lobuche to Kala Pattar began well before sunrise.
After a teahouse break, we continued our ascent up Kala Pattar, reaching the peak just before 10:00am.
It was a very difficult climb, but the view of Nuptse's icy spire and Everest's southwest face were awesome.

I was suffering from a mild case of altitude sickness (and not-so-mild case of exhaustion), so I stayed at the Gorak Shep camp, about 300m lower than Kala Pattar.

It's hidden from Khumbu trekkers by the massive Lhotse and Nuptse ridges, which are smaller, but big enough to eclipse Everest unless you climb high enough to get a peek.
The clouds obscured it most of the time we were on Kala Pattar, but occasionally we got lucky:
At dawn the next morning, there were no clouds at all, so I went back to Kala Pattar and climbed about a third of the way back up.
