It is the name of a highest level tantra and also the name of the dark blue male deity, whose golden consort is Vishvamata (Mother of the Universe.) The teaching of it, which is preparatory to the initiation, requires the construction of an intricate mandala, and to do it is an extensive undertaking.
The Kalachakra teachings eventually reached India in the tenth century, brought by two masters who, although they had tried to reach the mysterious land did not succeed.
In the 17th century, the Kalachakra made it to Inner Mongolia and Beijing, the Manchu capital of China, and on to Amdo, the northeastern province of Tibet.

In the Kalachakra tantra, most elements (if not all) of the mandala refer to the universe (outer Kalachakra), the body and mind (inner Kalachakra) and the practice (initiation, generation and completion stages).
The Kalachakra deity can be represented in several forms; the most simple one is only Kalachakra with two arms and one face, others can include his consort, Vishvamata, but most commonly one can see the full aspected deity with four faces, twenty-four arms and two legs, embracing Visvamata.
In the practice of Kalachakra, one strives at visualizing the complete mandala, including its hundreds of deities in perfect detail of the size of a small drop during the Generation Stage of the practice.

 Kalachakra History
At the request of King Suchandra of Shambala (the first king of Shambala of any importance), Shakyamuni Buddha took on the form of the Kalachakra deity with the consort Vishvamata, and gave these highest of teachings to a great assembly of sages and gods in southern India, at the Stupa of Dhanyakataka.
King Suchandra, who is said to be a manifestation of Vajrapani (a Buddha-form who represents the power of all the Buddhas) came from his home north of Kashmir to receive the teachings, accompanied by 96 generals and chieftains of the 96 minor kingdoms within Shambala.
At the successful conclusion of this retreat, he received a true vision of Kalachakra who, laying his hand on his head, prophesied that he would be like another King Suchandra for the propagation of these teachings.
