The Telugu poem 'Sri Kalahasti Satakam' explains the traditions associated with this temple.Muthuswamy Deekshitar, one of the foremost composers in the Karnatic Music Tradition has sung the glory of this temple in his kriti 'Sree Kaalahasteesa'.
The present structure of the temple is a foundation of the Cholas of the 10th century, as testified by inscriptions; improvements and additions were made during the subsequent years of the Chola rulers of Tamilnadu and the Vijayanagar emperors.
The Manikanteswarar temple, also in Kalahasti dates back to the period of Raja Raja Chola I (early 11th century), and it was reconstructed in stone in 1196 by Kulottunga III.

The exact nascence of kalamkari in Sri Kalahasti is unknown, however, textual resources indicate that the art form flourished throughout the Deccan plateau between the 13th and 19th centuries CE due to extensive textile trading that occurred along the Coromandel Coast.
Sri Kalahasti was most likely established as a kalamkari center due to its close proximity to a constant supply of clean, flowing water (a necessary component to kalamkari production), found in the River Swarnamurki that runs through the town.
The ebb and flow of kalamkari popularity continues to plague the artistic community at Sri Kalahasti, however at the moment there is an upsurge in interest in the art form by designers, NGOs and entrepreneurs living and working in nearby cities.

We decided to head to Sri Kalahasti, which is a relatively small temple town about 150K away from Vellore and well off the usual tourist track.
There was one hill temple that we intended to trek up to, but it was so hot it was impossible to muster the energy, so settled for looking at it from ground level instead.
After two days in Sri Kalahasti I had to get back to Chennai to take my 30 hour train journey (oh joy!) to Kolkata (Calcutta), and Bianca headed off back to Vellore via Kanchipuram.
