Ted Hufstader, a sophomore at Kalamazoo College, says he and a friend lined up at the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce on April 30 and waited for two hours in the rain to get tickets to the event.
"Some of the Kalamazoo College volunteers were given the responsibility of identifying potential protesters," he says, "and at least one of them performed this duty (in the case of the students asked to leave the rally) based on his recollection that some of these students had previously protested Republican positions on various issues."

 Roslaynn Carter Presents Partnership Award to Kalamazoo College
Kalamazoo, MI, August 22, 2005 - College and Kalamazoo Public Schools won the Carter Partnership Award as the most outstanding campus-community partnership in Michigan.
The College and Kalamazoo Public Schools partnership began in the fall of 1997 when 14 Kalamazoo College pre-calculus students paired with 14 Woodward Elementary School students in their first after-school tutoring program.
The partnership is administered by the Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Institute for Service-Learning at Kalamazoo College.

 The Kalamazoo Promise: College Tuition for All Grads
In a move with the potential to transform Kalamazoo Public Schools and the entire Kalamazoo area, KPS Superintendent Janice Brown on Thursday announced a program to provide four-year, full-tuition scholarships to KPS graduates to any public college or university in Michigan, beginning with the Class of 2006.
The scholarship program -- called The Kalamazoo Promise -- will cover 100 percent of tuition and mandatory fees for graduates who have been enrolled in KPS since kindergarten and whose parents live in the district.
She estimated the cost of the program will be about $3 million next year, and about $12 million a year by the time four graduating classes are in college.

Unfortunately, our group was denied entrance to the event after being identified by members of the Kalamazoo College Republicans (who were volunteering at the event) as "potential threats." Our classmates knew that we were not Bush supporters and that many of us have engaged in non-violent political protest.
In your May 10 edition, in "'K' Students Turned Away from Bush Rally," you report that students from the college who were Democrats were prevented from attending a rally for President Bush -- their President, last I heard -- while Republican students were admitted and active participants.
The citizens of Kalamazoo, as well as citizens of the many other places where this outrage against our Founders has taken place, should be up in arms.

Founded in 1987, the Kalamazoo College Handbell Choir was first directed by Judith Dodge Breneman, who was also director of the College Singers and the Bach Festival Choir.
Breneman left the college in 1989, and Russell Cooper, a 1989 graduate of Kalamazoo College, took over as director.
