Kalamazoo is home to Western Michigan University a nationally recognized research institution that has benefited from the local presence of Pfizer and Stryker.
As such, Kalamazoo is often referred to as a "college town with a strong white-collar presence"; this is in contradiction to eastern parts of the state that are predominantly blue collar.
