Downtown is the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, a "hands-on" museum aimed largely at children which also has a planetarium and a nationally recognized Challenger Learning Center, both of which are heavily influenced by the direction of Bay Ari-Gur.

The contamination in the Kalamazoo River is largely due to Polychlorinated Biphenyl’s (PCBs) that were discharged in the River from paper mills that have, for the most part, left the area.
Most of the land is surrounding the river is privately owned, but there are a few areas open to the public such as the Allegan State Game area where many hunters come to hunt the many animals living in the watershed area and many come to fish the Kalamazoo’s waters.

Officials from Kalamazoo County and the neighboring Allegan County, both, of which the Kalamazoo River runs through, are convinced of the need to extend an outreach and education effort to the at-risk populations in order to decrease fish consumption.
The river is a geographical highlight and scenic focal point for Kalamazoo and Allegan counties, but, due to presence of environmental contaminants in river water, soils and sediments, river properties have not been redeveloped to maximize economic potential or community revitalization.
The Kalamazoo River Operable Unit spans 80 miles of the river's length, from Morrow Dam at the outlet of Morrow Lake to the river mouth at Lake Michigan.

The Public Advisory Council (PAC) for the Kalamazoo River Area of Concern Remedial Action Plan (RAP) asked the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) to evaluate the health hazard from the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) present in the water and sediment of the Kalamazoo River.
If the Kalamazoo River were used as a drinking water supply, the amount of TSS one might ingest in a day through drinking the water might be substantially higher than the amount of soil one would be likely to ingest via contact with sediments from the river.
Based on the PCB concentrations reported in the sediment and water of the Kalamazoo River, and considering the frequency of exposure to the sediments and limited absorption of PCBs from soils, there is no need to restrict access to the Kalamazoo River or Portage Creek.

To return the river and surrounding area to its original configuration, WESTON worked with USACE to develop a plan to restore pre-existing stream corridor meanders and connections between existing wetlands and floodplains.
Portage Creek had to be diverted to excavate both sides of the creek and the creek bottom while protecting downstream water from PCB migration.
WESTON used GPS to locate and document sampling locations along 50 x 50-foot sampling grids, and to restore the stream to its original location once remediation was complete.

Albion’s pioneers recognized the valuable resource the Kalamazoo River provided at “the Forks.” The river’s drop in elevation invited Albion’s early industrialists to build races and install power wheels for their equipment to grind grain and saw lumber.

People who eat fish from the Kalamazoo River are more likely to have higher amounts of some chemicals in their bodies than those who do not according to a report released today by the Michigan Department of Community Health, two local health Departments and the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
The results of Phase I indicate differences between anglers from Kalamazoo and Allegan Counties with respect to fish consumption advisory awareness, using fish as a source of food, employment, and sharing fish taken from the water bodies with friends, relatives and neighbors.
