 Waterfalls in Zambia
The falls can be seen from Sioma but if you cross the river 2 km downstream in the dugout canoe ferry there and take a path back upstream, the full magnitude of these spectacular falls can be seen.
Near the Chipembe pontoon in the Northern Province are a miniature Victoria Falls that nourish a small rain forest on the Kalungwishi River.
This very picturesque waterfall was believed to be a sanctuary of spirits while the waters of the Ng’ona River are used for bathing chiefs before they are installed on the throne so as to cleanse them of bad luck and misfortune.

 Welcome to idledreamer.com - FAQ
Mbala is further from Kalambo Falls than Mpulungu, but has the advantage that there is a road (of sorts) going from it most of the way to the falls.
Actually the real reason I was nowhere near the falls after 5 hours was because I decided to follow the lakeshore to the mouth of the river and follow the river to the waterfall as it would be virtually impossible to get lost.
The next day I decided to walk to the 200 metre high Kalambo Falls, which was 4 or 5 hours one way on foot according to my guidebook writer.

Kalambo Falls: Zambia Travel Articles: Safari Lodges in Zambia…
Forming the border between Zambia or Tanzania, the Kalambo River drifts carelessly in the dry season and turns into a rapid foaming mass in the wet.
The Kalambo River basin is one of the richest archaeological sites in Africa, with prehistoric abodes undisturbed for thousands of years.
During the dry season calmness is restored, and you can safely boulder hop from Zambia to Tanzania across the top of Kalambo Falls.

 Times of Zambia
He said Kalambo Falls was one of the deepest falls in the world and is situated only 32 km from Mbala.
Mr Sichilima, who is member of Parliament for Mbala, named Kalambo Falls in Northern Province as one of the wonders of the world which, if properly marketed, could help the region earn the much needed foreign exchange.
This is the only source of a river where only after 15 km, the river is so wide,” he said.

 Kalambo Falls
Description : At 221m high (twice as high as the Victoria Falls and second highest in Africa), the Kalambo Falls are a popular tourist destination on the Tanzania border (the river marks the border).
The road to the Falls is good gravel up to the well-signposted turnoff 12km N of Mbala, then runs 21km W on ok dirt track to a fork in the road; the left track leads to 2 viewpoints (one overlooking Mpulungu Harbour, the other L. Tanganyika), the right to the actual falls.
There is a cliff path along the south side of the gorge, leading to a viewpoint directly opposite the falls, and a steep one to the bottom of the falls on the north side (for the fit only).

World Waterfall Database: World's Tallest Waterfalls
Secondly, and perhaps most shockingly, the two falls on the Merced River which comprise the Giant Staircase, Vernal and Nevada Falls, were both shown to be much shorter than previously thought.
Nevada Falls appears to only stand about 420 feet tall, versus 594 feet as commonly thought, and Vernal Falls really is only about 200 feet tall, rather than 317 feet.
In India, we found evidence that Dudhsagar Falls, commonly thought to be 1968 feet, or 600 meters, tall, actually stands 1017 feet, or 310 meters tall.

VirtualTourist.com - Northern Province Tips - Pictures, Tips and Reviews
The falls shown here is actually the first of a series of three waterfalls, located with a nice rain forest on the western side of the river and a campsite just above the falls on the opposite bank.
The headland on the left is Zambia and is roughly from where you begin your walk toward the falls.
In the years since I was there, a small hydro-electric dam has been developed above the falls, but enough water is released to allow the falls to continue to impress.

 Lake Tanganyika & Mpulungu
Bring plenty of water for the journey there and back as the water in the Kalambo river is not safe to drink.
The width of the falls varies from 2m in the dry season expanding to an impressive 15m after heavy rains, cascading down a sheer cliff into a deep green pool below, through the gorge and on about 3 more kilometres into Lake Tanganyika.
The route there is not marked so ask for a guide at the lakeside village where you start to climb and try to leave as early as possible in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
