Looks like primarily used for thrust attacks but given our FMA training I could also see sungkites(hooking thrusts/gouges) and some subtle slash work.
It may still be used by some Kalaripayatu and Sikh martial systems.
My cousin just picked one up and its his new favorite toy, its wonderful to wear by the way when its roped on, you can see all kinds of wonderfull blade angles.

Shaolin, Kalaripayatt, Kalaripayatu resemble Kung Fu and involve the concept of prana/Chi...which isn't accepted by western civilizations past and present.
The awareness of prana was brought about mostly through the study of Yoga.

Not that Sourav came here to show his swordsmanship, but what happened was even better.
It was a breath taking display of the prowess of the practioners of one of the oldest martial arts form of the world, Kalaripayatu (pardon me for mis-spelling it, if I have done so).
Clad in the traditinal fl clothes and equipped with shining swords, spears, staffs and what not, these people from the heart of Kozhikode showed us and the Pakistanis the spirit of Kerala.

Has anyone practiced or seen any of these in action?
Depending on your source, Kalaripayatu (sp?) is either one of the world's oldest martial arts, practiced by Bodhidharma and the predecessor of Shaolin Kung Fu or just an invention of the last 500 years.
Any info or firsthand experience would be much appreciated.
