It is located about 17 km SSW of Patras, about 40 km south of the Rio-Antirio bridge/, about 70 km SW of Aigio, 55 km W of Kalavryta, about 140 km NW of Tripoli and about 10 km from GR-9/Patras By-Pass.
The village has a small school, a lyceum, a gymnasium, a health centre, a church, a small post office, a train station and a square (plateia) which includes some trees and a fountain.
Until the pavement of the road and the one linking Patras and Kalavryta in the mid-20th century, the village didn't had paved roads or electricity.

In the Morea itself, in spite of plentiful warning, the Turks were wholly unprepared; while the bulk of the Ottoman army, under the seraskier Khurshid Pasha, was engaged in the long task of reducing the intrepid Ali, pasha of lannina (see ALl, pasha of lannina).
The force with Outbreak which Germanos marched from Kalavryta against of the Patras was composed of peasants armed with scythes, insurrec- clubs and slings, among whom the primates exertion.

In 1208 the castle of Kalavryta was built, a strong Franchise fortress, capital of the Barony of Kalavryta which was divided into 12 Knight feuds.
In 1687 the area came under the control of the Venetians, in 1715 again under the Turks until it was made free during the Revolt of 1821.
The inhabitants of the city and area increased and since Kalavryta became the capital of the country (eparchia) services of all authorities (court-houses, Head of Police, Banks, Public Services, High School, summer seat of the bishop) were established, while a lot of hotels served the many visitors of the beautiful place.

Dear members, C. Buhayer reported about the Kalavryta holocaust which comemoration was last Monday the 13th of Dec. It took place in Kalavryta and not in Patras.
A few days before the execution of the Kalavryta's male population of 496 and the burning of the municipality, ELAS ordered the execution of the 80 german hostages, who were caught on October 17th and were living in the village Mazeika, up to December 5th working for the villagers.
The unearthing of the dead men and the examination of the bodies by german doctors in presence of the Kalavryta doctors, revealed the mutilation of the corpses.

Due to partisan activity around the town of Kalavryta in southern Greece, a unit of the German army 'Kampfgruppe Ebersberger ', surrounded the town on the morning of Monday, 13th Dec. All the inhabitants were herded into the local school.
Females and young boys were separated from the men and youths, the latter being marched to a hollow in a nearby hillside.
It was not until late afternoon that the women and young boys were released to face the enormity of the tragedy.

The main theme of the book concerns itself with “Operation Kalavryta”: Seventy-eight German soldiers were captured in October 1943 in a skirmish with freedom fighters whose leaders came from the township of Kalavryta.
Soon afterwards, three of the 78 Germans were murdered close to Kalavryta and the monastery of Aghia Larva (which was the birthplace of the freedom movement in 1821).
For example, when the German Federal President Rau visited Kalavryta in 2000, he too, was influenced by these reports which state the total number of victims to be in the area of 1.400 dead.

 In the late 1880s the mountainous Kalavryta Province was inhabited by some 44000 people whose only access to the northern coast of Peloponnese Peninsula was the poor road linking Kalavryta with Patra through montainous passes.
It took twice the money to carry a pound of grain from Egion to Kalavryta than to bring it all the way from Russia to Greece.
Consequently, a concession for building and operating the Diakofto - Kalavryta railway was granted to SPAP, the operator of the Peloponnese metre-gauge system.  It took five whole years and 4.8 Mio francs to reach the Kalavryta plateu scrapping the future extension of 90km to Tripolis due to lack of funds.

During the meeting, Rau will be formally presented with an album from his visit to Kalavryta in April 2000, issued by the Kalavryta municipality in December 2003 to commemorate the 60th anniversary since the atrocities.
Rau visited Kalavryta accompanied by President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos to formally apologise on behalf of the German people for the most extreme act of violence perpetrated by German occupation troops against Greeks.
