Kalemegdan is a Turkish word meaning "field-battle", but that name belies the rather more ancient history of the place.
Kalemegdan Park is on a rocky outcrop overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, a strategically valuable location that the Romans first fortified in the 1st Century CE.
Later, after numerous raids ransacked the Roman castrum, their foundations were added to by the Byzantines, the Serbs, the Ottomans, and the Austrians—all of whom sought control of passage on the two rivers and a base for maintaining order over the surrounding lands.

 Fortress Kalemegdan
The fortress Kalemegdan   has a very long history, going back at least to the castrum of Roman times; destroyed several times by successive waves of invaders, was rebuilt as a castle by the Byzantines in the 12th century.
Under the Serb Despot Stefan Lazarevic  , son of the king Lazar , Belgrade became the capital of the Serbian kingdom; the fortress was strengthened, and the Despot's palace was built within the old castle.
During the partial independence of Serbia, in the first half of the 19th century, the Kalemegdan fortress was still occupied by a Turkish garrison.

BELGRADE, Serbia -- The Kalemegdan Fortress is the dominant landmark in this Balkan city of 1.6 million, commanding the northern heights of the city where the Sava River flows into the Danube, Europe's second-longest river.
Kalemegdan's troubled past -- a long list of invaders that included the Romans, Austrians, Turks and Germans have seized ownership of the high ground -- gave the region its reputation as a crossroads between East and West.
Belgrade's main tourist attraction is Kalemegdan, which takes its name from the Turkish words for "field" and "battle." The sprawling complex, composed of Kalemegdan Park and the Belgrade Fortress, offers evidence of Roman ramparts dating to the fourth century.

The name Kalemegdan actually applies only to the spacious plateau surrounding the Fortress, which was turned into a park in the eighties of the XIX century.
But it is Kalemegdan that best conjures up the history of the place with the traces it bears of all the historical eras, dominations and battles the city has seen: sections of Roman walls stand below the Serbian which in turn stand below the Turkish and Austrian fortifications.
