Neither the circumstances attending your birth (even though you can prove that you are freeborn), nor the offices which you allege you have held, are sufficient evidence that your daughter was born free; for there is nothing which prevents you from being freeborn, and her from being a slave.
It is not sufficient proof of the servitude of Glyco to show that his mother and his brother have been slaves, for the connivance of freeborn persons cannot prejudice their relatives; nor is one of several slaves born of the same mother prohibited from obtaining his freedom.

Kalends is one of the few Latin words retaining the K from the early alphabet.
That the Ides were usually the thirteenth day of the month might be thought the origin of the unlucky connotation of the number 13, but this is not so, and there is nothing generally sinister about the Ides.

This causes a small oddity with regard to leap years since, at the end of February, the dates are given by counting down to the first of March.
Without a special rule, this would mean that, for instance, while February 14th was normally the sixteenth day before the Kalends of March, it would be the seventeenth in leap years.
Other than the occasional macron over the vowels (which can be safely left out) and the letter I in place of both J (which wasn't in the alphabet yet in classical Latin) and Y (which represented a different sound), the three-letter abbreviations for the months in Latin are the same as they are in English.
