The characters I will be discussing are Kullervo of southern Finland, the Son of Kalev, or the Kalevipoeg of Estonia, Sigurd from North and Central Europe, Starkath from various parts of the Baltic region, especially Denmark, Beowulf from Denmark and Sweden, Grettir from Norway and Iceland, and of course Oedipus from Greece.
The Son of Kalev became an orphan at the beginning of his story, and that determined most of what happened to him.
Kullervo, the Son of Kalev, Starkath, Beowulf and Grettir never married, the marriages of Sigurd and Oedipus were disasters—and the marriage of Oedipus specifically made the land infertile.

Soon Linda, too, dies, as she is raped by a Finnish sorcerer and, though saved from the latter by Heavens, is converted into a rocky pillar in Iru (near Tallinn).
However, in the same way as Faust’s soul is finally redeemed by Heavens, the ancient Estonian gods led by Taara (the thunder god, comparable to Thor, in Scandinavian mythology) decide to bind the revived Kalevipoeg to a rock at Hell’s gate (a parallel with Prometheus), making him the guardian of the inferno.

The leitmotifs and style of Mati Unt’s fiction changed little from when he first began publishing in the 1960s and was regarded as something of a Wunderkind.
Unt’s prose is rooted in the mythology of everyday life, personal relationships, sexuality, and especially that of modern urban living—although the national trauma of the Soviet occupation always lurks under the surface.
The novel consists of the author’s confessions, novel fragments, snatches of plays, comments on how to write a novel, poems, minutes of interrogations, letters, and quite a few quotes from popular classics.
